Hi all, I was out today on my 2015 Yamaha 212ss (twin 1.8 ho) and my starboard engine cut out while cruising. Since cutting out, the engine sounds like it’s cranking but it will not start. The port engine starts without issue. Please listen to the attached video to get a better idea of what is going on. There are no codes. I greatly appreciate any help/advice. Thank you.

Gotta start with the basics fuel, spark. Compression and go from there. Whatever has failed from those 3 thats where you start next. Quickest way to check spark and fuel is get some brake cleaner spray. Pull the breather hose off and spray in there while someone cranks, if it fires for a few seconds then you have spark and no fuel

Sounds like it’s cranking a bit easy intermittently. Check the compression. I hate to even suggest it, but sounds like a timing chain issue to me. Hopefully I’m wrong, but a running engine that shuts off immediately, sounds like that while cranking, points me in that direction.

Only one switch that will crank and not fire.............Lanyard safety switch............clean out port switches NO Crank. Neutral safety switch on throttles allow no crank.

I also hate to think about timing chain like itsdgm says but it also fits...............................I see the engine the cranks no start is not moving(shaking) like it should with compression........that goes back to itsdgm diagnose. I thought the 2015 had the stronger chain!!!!!

Is easy to lay a spark plug out in the coil pack You do haft to ground the plug! check spark I personally unhook the injector wires so gas fumes don't come out to hit my plug. Compression check easy! On the layard switch you can swap the wires of the starting engine to the no start and see if she fires. The switch has 2 sides on a single switch.

Thank you all for your help. If it were the lanyard, would the engine still move (shake) while cranking? Is there anything else that would cause the engine to not move (shake) during cranking other than the timing chain?

Lanyard cuts fuel so it would crank just not fire

Hi All,

Update: Looks like my timing chain broke. Please see attached folder with video and photos. What are my best options from here? I appreciate all the help.

Thank you!
You will have damaged valves and many other damaged components. It can be quite expensive to fix. Head might need to be replaced if the seats or guides are damaged.

2015 1.8 it does look like the 3-4 link smaller chain...........in the past rebuild has always been my choice ...............but lately finding a dealer that can truly do it right and be honest on the bill............is a needle in the hay stack. Head work along with timing chain replacement is a costly Indaver, and a good dealer should offer you the updated 4-5 link HD chain as an added cost..........then he should ask for the good engine to be brought up to HD chain standards.........now were into a 15-20 K range OUCH!!!!!

Its not a good thing to happen but if it was mine I would look for the needle in the haystack and if that did not pan out........I saw couple of 1.8 2018 engines off ebay that caught my eye for around 5K.........still a pain to swap but more my style at my age.

Good luck
