i want to buy a 2007 yamaha sx230 and the seller says that the oil light comes on one motor but when he shuts the motor off it goes out and will stay off but will come back on when he slows down and then speed back up again . he also says there are no knocking noise and sounds good . What would cause the light to go on and is it a serious problem? he also said that motor was recently replaced . what do you guys think ?

Welcome @coolguy3719 thats a tough one to answer without being there. Obviously the light is a warning designed to signal an irregularity in oil psi. Usually low oil psi. Low oil psi is death to an engine. I know your question is aimed to get a better feel for whether or not it's common on our boats, and imho, no it's not. It could be simply a bad psi sending unit. Or it could be a bad oil pump or other problem causing unusually low (or possibly high) psi. At the very least have a certified Yamaha mechanic hook it up to YDS (Yamaha Diagnostic Software) and check the actual oil psi while it's running.

Hope that helps you out, good luck with your boat shopping.

@justason, do you have any experience with oil lights on MR1s?

I would want it fixed or the price decreased sufficiently to justify the risk of replacing an engine in which case I would endeavor to fix it.

Thanks ! I saw in other questions about that issue , that sometimes the battery if low might give false readings and the seller just does'nt sound to handy . But if I do a compression test and all readings are good would that be a positive sign that there still hope for the motor and I also if there is too much or not enough oil in that motor would the light come on because I think he said he did a oil change but if it wasnt done right ,maybe that would be an issue. Im just asking if its worth for me to drive 4hrs to go see a boat if it would cost to much to repair

Too much oil is likely to clog the air filter.

I suggest checking the oil level when the engine is warm. That could either be in the water or attached to a hose following the flush procedure of starting the engine, turn on the water to that engine, run engine for 5 to 10 minutes at idle, turn off the water, then turn off the engine.

How clean is the engine bay? Is there any sign of oil leakage?

Is the sign of soot around the exhaust near the jet drives?

Im supposed to go see the boat tomorrow but its 4hrs away from where I leave . I basicly want to know what to look for and see after how much lower to offer him to compensate for that engine repair

Would be nice to know why the old motor blew.

Smell the oil to make sure it's not burnt or smells of gas.

While you are looking at it tomorrow, type @(help) in this thread without the ( ) and a bunch of us will get an alert and get you help ASAP.

Give us the lowdown now....how much? Hours? Fresh or salt water? In what state?

He says that it has no hour meter and I dont know if its been in salt water because he told me that he bought the boat in the fall and dont like to drive it and deal with it and he is asking 13900$ that I think is good even if I have to fix the motor

Make sure you test drive it in the water. Most boats run great on the trailer!

I'm going to talk to him tomorow before I go see it and ask more questions before I leave . Ill ask him if there is a place to test drive it and Ill keep you guys posted on what I do . Thanks

On my 2008 212X with the same MR-1 engines I never get an oil light. However, with the YDS hooked up, a hot engine will always report low oil pressure at idle. Since I have noticed this I have switched to 10w-40 weight oil. It still does it and I have seen the same on OperationROL's previous boat (sx230). It may be possible that this boat is reporting the event all the way to the dash lights. Check the oil level and do your due diligence.

I have the same questions everyone else is posting, primarily WHY was the engine replaced. Add to that: to what degree? when the engine is replaced its usually the engine alone and all the bolt on items are ported over from the old one. It could be the sensor was installed wrong or damaged in this process.

I would definitely get it fixed. My oil light has saved my a$$ a few times, it's there for a reason and needs to be respected. ...

Hey guys ! I just wanted you guys to know that I did buy that boat and tried it out and everything looked good beside that light . It was working strong , motor area was clean , didn't smell nothing on the dipstick like you guys said to check and I started looking at it last week end and basically everything seems to be pointing at the oil sensor because when I got home every time after starting the light came on , so I took the sensor off and realize that no oil was dripping and I started the motor without the sensor and blew out oil and after that oil was leaking before I put it back and the light wasn't lighting up anymore but now it don't light up at idle and is good for 30 min but when I'm at high speed and slow down the light comes on . So I ordered new sensor and will keep you guys posted . Until then if you guys have any suggestions, let me know and if that don't work I'll send it to Yamaha to hook up on the computer. But this boat starts right up , don't hesitate , I changed the oil to 10w40 and is always strong , don't knock so I don't know what else to do
