Hello all, I’m looking at a 2014 Yamaha SX190 as my first jet boat purchase. I’ve had several jet skis over the years and have grown out of them and now have a very young daughter that I would like to introduce to the lake (much like I was at an early age). I’m just looking for some tips on what I should be looking for when checking out this boat?? I’m familiar with traditional style stern drive boats and jet skis but a complete novice in the jet boat world. The boat I’m looking has approximately 120 hrs on it and is listed at 19,900 which seems average from what I can tell by checking boat trader/craigslist. Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum - you have come to the right place!!!

Do you have any pictures? Condition is everything. What part of country are the boat, and you, located?

EDIT: can you take it for a sea trial/test ride? That would be very important.

I’m located in the southwest suburbs of Chicago and the boat is in Indianapolis so a test drive is out for the time being (at least until it warms up). I have only seen the images in the craigslist post so far (I’ve also had some conversations with the owner via email) and was just wondering if there was anything specific I should be checking when I do see it. It will be a 6 hour round trip but there is absolutely nothing up for sale in my immediate area.

If the boat looks cosmetically well maintained, there is a good chance it will be on par with mechanical up-keep. Hard to go completely wrong with these Yammies - they are very robust/reliable.
Since you are already used to steering with thrust the handling should not be an issue.
One think to consider - these boats are LOUD. And the have high revving engines that do not give that nice easy going cruise.
On thing to inspect are the "cleanout plugs" - make sure they can be removed easily. The boat should accelerate without excessive "impeller slippage" or cavitation, and should reach close to or above 40mph, topping off at ~7,400-7,600 RPM at WOT.
Also - check out the FAQ section here for tips on maintenance and inspection. There is a user map which may identify willing member(s) who could check it out for you.
