2016 242 x - scupper valve question

I've had my scupper valve crack in the past and almost sent my motors underwater, so I had the valve replaced ~2020. This year, I have yet to get the boat in the water. I pushed the black door like part on the scupper valve to remove some trash I saw in there, and the valve is now stuck open. I thought it acted more like a door and would close?

Also, shouldn't the valve prevent water from rushing in? It's there to allow water to escape the internals of the boat quickly?

The scupper value is above the articulating keel in-between the two motors.

Yes, it is supposed to swing like a door, but it swings the other way, out not in.

It closes when water tries to come in from the stern of the boat and opens when water comes down from the deck.

Maybe you can pull it back down with a small pick or hook or something. Maybe you could run something down from the deck drain to push it back in place.

The common recommendation is to replace this plastic fitting with a stainless steel version.

If I drop the boat in the water with the scupper in the current condition, will it let water in? I actually have a stainless steel scupper that I purchased a few years ago. I never had it installed because I read a bit about stainless steel at or under water might be an issue?

This is weird - why would the valve operate backwards and let lake water in vs. letting drain water out? Have I just not had enough coffee this morning?

I feel the same way, seems like a wimpy little part to keep the boat afloat. Maybe it is okay that the door moves both ways? I should just have the dealer install the stainless-steel version.....

If you come off plane and stop quickly, some water may come up through the deck drain, but it would drain right back out. Shouldn't be enough to swamp your boat or anything. If some gets in the bilge, the pump will take care of that.

To fix it, you could take that screw out and pull the flap out, then put it back in correctly. Should be pretty easy.

It's not supposed to move both ways, it sits on that shelf in the fitting you can see in the picture. But since it is flexible rubber, if you press on it hard enough you can shove it past that stop.

The good news is, is that even with your flap open, if your hose isn't leaking, you're not going to take any water into the boat. Just make sure your hose isn't leaking.

The rubber may have hardened over time (you aren't supposed to push it into the hole) - you can buy replacement flapper on amazon and other boating supply stores. A EXAMPLE is posted below--I have no idea if this is a fit for your scupper - you'd need to measure it.

Easiest fix for you is to unscrew that small screw and pull it out, and replace with a fresh new one, or clean up the old one if its still operational.

I have an attwood stainless steel scupper that I've been hesitant to have installed, maybe it's time. I also noticed in the picture that some of the silicone around the outside of the scupper looks to have peeled away.

The scupper valve currently on the boat (in the pics) isn't the one that came with the boat, that scupper valve cracked during the winter unknown to me, and when I launched in the spring the engine bay took on a bunch of water. that was 4 or 5 years ago now and I've had the replacement you see installed by my local dealer.

Here is the Attwood SS scupper I have, any issues with having this installed by the dealer?
