This is is the second time I've used my 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L to tow my 2021 Yamaha FSH 210. The car comes with the factory towing package with a factory hitch and factory wiring.

The trailer is level everything is balanced the car is rated to tow 2000 lb more than everything even if I had a full tank of gas. When I tow the car struggles even to get out of 5th gear and finally when it does jump to six gear it will never go into 7th or 8th. When I'm trying to cruise at 60 or 65 miles per hour in 6th Gear my RPMs are 5,000 and I'm getting roughly six to seven miles a gallon.

Does anybody have experience with this issue that somehow their vehicle is not functioning properly because when the numbers add up this vehicle should tow my boat with no issue.

I have a 2022 grand cherokee L overland and tow without issues . I have the 5.7 engine

Does it go into 7th and 8th gear? And switch gears at standard 3500 rpm?

Do you have tow/haul mode? and if so, maybe it locks those gears out? Pretty common of all brands to lock out the highest gear in Tow/haul mode. Not sure about two gears, but they are so finely meshed these days, it could lock out two.

There is no tow haul mode... it just came with the heavy duty cooler heavy duty springs whatever the standard tow package was and then they had to install the actual tow harness and Bar but it was all done at the dealership it just in my mind there's no way I should be in 5th gear at almost 6,000 RPMs towing a boat that still lighter by close to 2000 lb

This was my thought as well - my Tahoe has a tow mode.

So if you have the 6200lb tow capacity, then I am assuming you have the 3.6l V6 engine. So running in higher RPM';s would be possible. High is relative of course, but much higher than the V8 powered version of your vehicle.

If it's the 2l turbo, with 6000lb tow capacity, you bet it's gonna scream.

According to your 2022 manual: The electronically controlled transmission adapts itsshift schedule based on driver inputs, along with environmental and road conditions. The transmission electronics are self-calibrating; therefore, the first few shiftson a new vehicle may be somewhat abrupt. This is anormal condition, and precision shifts will develop within a few hundred miles (kilometers).

It also states that you can program out particular gears, and you can use the paddle shifters or auto stick to allow you to push the transmission into a lower or higher gear if you feel it is needed and the transmission is not shifting. So I would say read your manual in the shifting section if you are not familiar with the autostick feature.

My take is this vehicle was not designed for regular towing of a larger trailer/boat, but can do it. It's just not as easy as the flick of a tow/haul button.

I’ve been towing a Yamaha 242 with Jeep Gand Cherokee for almost 10 yrs. What engine and how many miles does your Jeep have and is it a 4x4? Also, not wanting to offend you, but how much experience do you have towing? Cars perform differently under load.

I am not sure this adds up. Using the internet for sources (double check them but they should be close) your 5th gear ratio is 1.28 and your rear end is 3.45. Based on that, in 5th you should see 3400 rpm at 70mph. In 6th which is 1:1, 2700 at the same speed. The only way it’s conceivable that you would be seeing 6k is if you were in a lower gear or your transfer case is in low range.

Have you had this discussion with the Jeep dealer who services your vehicle? Maybe a transmission (software?) issue?

You may also consider joint one of the jeep forums and ask your question there. My guess is that others may have also experienced this issue.

Jim

I doubt you can even hit highway speeds with the transfer case in low range.

No real help from me, but do they seriously put a 2.0L turbo in the GC L? That's pathetic. The 3.6L is barely adequate for the regular GC, the L really needs the 5.7, and that's a great combo. Sometimes I wish we had gone that route vs the expedition... Love the fam cam.

Wow I thought my Durango with the tow n go package was bad getting 11-12 mpg 5.7V8
It has the 8 speed and will hit 8th going down hill but if its in Tow mode it will not got to 8the gear and runs about 3-4K rpm on moderate hills
