Hey y'all, my name is Miggs.
I just placed a deposit on a new 255XD and I am pumped! I have done a lot of research, and feel confident, but for those with a 255 or any wake series Yamaha, any recommendations, or things you wished you knew, outside of basics (learn your boat, etc)? Thanks in advance.

Sup Miggs!

Congrats on the deposit. is the boat at the marina or being shipped?

in the mean time, lurk on this forum and read everything you can. Not just about the 255 but Yamaha’s in general. Gives you a great overview of the boat and how they work. Then get on YouTube and watch a crap ton of videos. I’m a visual learner and it helped me tremendously.

Not sure if this your first boat or not but start getting your gear together ie..rope, fenders, safety gear. Make sure to get an anchor if the dealer isn’t adding it in the purchase ( they don’t come with one believe it or not ??‍♂️).

If it’s your First boat, got to boatus.org website and take an online course about boating. They are free and excellent info. Plus it will help with your insurance rates.

Your first time out, check the weather and try and go on a weekday so the boat ramps arent so busy. Take your time. Get a pre/post launch checklist together. Only go out with wife or whoever is going to help ya with the boat for the first couple of times till you get comfy with the boat, trailering, docking etc…it’s less pressure on you cuz you’ll have enough Already.

And when you get your boat you gotta post some pics! We love pics on this forum.

Reach out with questions and use the search function. This is a GREAT forum with a ton of info and a really good group of members that will help ya out.

CONGRATS!

In no particular order, here are a few things that sometimes come as a surprise to those new to Yamaha boats....

- It takes longer for the engine to charge the house battery than it takes to drain it when you are operating off of it while floating typically (that is, if you crank the tunes at the sandbar and then return to the dock, the house battery won't be fully recharged.) So, if you spend any significant time floating on the house battery, use an external charger when you get back to shore.

- Slow speed handling is different than with outboards or stern drives. The 255XD in particular doesn't have a rudder, so there isn't any steering control when in neutral even if you have forward motion. You get used to it very quickly, but you'll want to play with it a bunch.

- In my opinion, the DriveX system isn't a panacea. I'm still getting to know it, but don't expect that it'll be like it is in the review videos. That's not so say it isn't cool, and that aspects of it will turn out to be very useful, but it isn't magic. You may or may not find that docking is more easily accomplished using throttles and steering like you would with any other boat.

- Don't be shy about going over the boat with a fine tooth comb before delivery. I personally find that Yamaha is middle of the pack when it comes to quality control / issues....but loose hardware is somewhat common and these are most easily dealt with prior to delivery. Some dealers are great about finding these things before you do, and some not so much.

- I personally really like the Yamaha mooring covers. They are pricey, but do a great job at protecting the boat. They typically need to be ordered separately and if you don't ask about it, you may be surprised not to get it at delivery. I found that it was a couple hundred dollars cheaper ordering it from another dealer than it was from the dealer I bought the boat from.

Hope this helps.

All great tips so far. I'll repeat one...take a boater safety course asap. And if you have a significant other joining you regularly on that boat, have them take the course as well.

Im possibly in the market for a new 255xd. Currently drive a moomba wake
Boat.
Mind me asking what you paid otd? Did you get any extras (accessories etc…)thrown in?
What was the warranty? Thanks.

Great advice y'all! I really appreciate it.

Definitely have the others in the family learn to unload/load/dock the boat or be able to back the trailer. It will cut your time by 3/4 in the launch and remove almost ALL of the stress.
Love the boat choice. Not the best surf boat but does it and what surf boat does 55+ mph? I want one some day.

Thanks a lot. Great advice for sure.
It's definitely not the best surf, for sure, but a great, "Jack of all trades" type of boat. And does well in the bodes of water I frequently traverse.

I agree, it’s not the best wave but, I did notice a significant upgrade in the wave quality when I added the FatSac to the transom.. Ballast..and more ballast is key!

I do really enjoy this boat And it’s layout.

I went out with a buddy of mine who was part of a boat club and we had a Moomba that day and we got the shit beat out of us. It was a very light chop on the lake that day. That hull is good for surfing but cruising? No way! My Yamaha would have cruised on those waters all day and not thought much about the chop. The significance of a hull design was eye opening to me.

Yamaha is a master of none but yup, a jack of all trades and I’ll take that any and every day.

So I’m actually going on a test ride in two days on the 255 XD! I’m also interested in learning about it. I have teenagers that want to wake surf but we also want the versatility with cruising and tubing. I know that the Surf wave is not as good as a true wake Boat but in peoples opinion, is it good enough to surf? What makes it not as good? Is it just not as clean? Is it not as big? I’m trying to figure out if “not as good” really matters for intermediate level surfers. Has anyone surfed on both types and can tell me the difference?

Great stuff! First off, this boat is FUN. It turns heads and is very enjoyable both on plane or just hanging out on the sand bar.
So to start, I like to think of this boat as the Jack of all trades, master of none. And I say that as, this boat does everything VERY WELL, and that includes the surf.
Total ballasts equal 1600lbs when fully loaded. I compare that to my buddy's wake surf ATX '22, he has 3000lbs of of ballasts. In my opinion, I think it does well. For example, took it out yesterday with three people on the boat (myself, wife and her friend) My wife surfs goofy, so I filled the ballasts 40/100/100 and the wake was great, especially when I had her friend sitting starboard. However, when I had her friend surfing regular, and has the ballasts at 100/100/40, and my wife sitting port, the wake was just good. Solid for a beginner, but left a lot to be desired.
I know that if I had more weight on the boat, whether people or FAT SAC, it would produce a better wake. IMO, I would like to have a few more people on board, and add a FAT SAC. I was even able to get my kiddo on the surf board, and she's 10 surfing goofy.
Again when compared to my friends wake surf boat, it does well, only needs MORE WEIGHT, in my opinion. And it handles 10x better in rough waters compared to my friends wake surf boat, based on the hull.
My ending thoughts, this boat will do you VERY well. I love everything from the color to the features. My wife and kids are huge into water sports, and I am more into the enjoyment of relaxing and being able to get across the Chesapeake Bay when desired, and this does GREAT! 3.5 ft waves, and you cut right through. There are some stability issues, but that is to be expected. There are options I can add to help this, like SeeKeeper, but have yet to pull the trigger. To add the features of xdrive, I love it! When I can't seem to get into my slip, xdrive is EXTREMELY helpful.
All-in-all, it is a great choice. Maintenance is lower than a surf boat (due to inboard, to include, a lot of mechanics have given up on inboards here in my area) and I love the supercharged engines and not having a prop. Although we still treat it like there is a prop and safety being important, it is nice to put that portion of your mind at ease.
Again, I surf here in brackish water here on the east coast. I would love to try this thing on the lake.

I hope this helps.

Every time I go out since your comment, I continue to agree with you more and more! Love the Jack of all trades. Cause it is so true!

I apologize for the late response, OTD $111,195. They also included free first oil change, Coast Guard Kit, Anchor (hate these boats don't come with them) and Premium Mooring Cover. I purchased extended Warranty (warranty is 1 year on engine) for an additional 4 years. Hull is 7 year manufacture warranty.
I hope this helps.

I just got a 2023 255XD for 87k out the door with 14 hours on it

Congratulations on your new boat. I just got one as well. I agree with the others; it's a great jack of all trades. I love all the space, the tower, the look, the low draft, and it's just a blast to drive. I also have mastered the Drive and Drive X and just love them. My hands never leave the wheel when docking or maneuvering at low speed.

As other have said, it's never going to match a MasterCraft, Centurian, or Supra for surfing, but those boats cost nearly three times as much, and while they are truly amazing boats, they just seem to do one thing exceptionally well.

My biggest complaint about this boat is the lack of storage because so much is used up by the ballast tanks. It's nice they are soft FatSac ballast bags, but if you have anything in, say, the ski locker, you have to remove it when you fill the ballast. One thing that amazes me is that the pure play surf boats seem to have tons (and I mean tons) of storage and yet have two to three times the ballast. Yamaha should have found other places to put the ballast, such as under the deck as the surf boats do. Granted, the Yamaha does have a head, and none of the surf boats do, which is one of the reasons I went with the Yamaha (a head was a must have for my wife). Still, other boats of this size, like the SeaRay SDX 250, have a head and crazy amounts of storage. So that's my rant.

This forum has a lot of good info for 2024 255XD new owner.

Enjoy.
