could someone list the main differences between the Yamaha 242x and the AR240?

I know the tower/Bimini is one.....
Built in ballasts on the 242x
Stereo and speakers??

Other big differences to justify the $18k difference in price?

Not sure but would bet that the 242 has Berber carpet, docking lights, dual battery system, shower, solar panels and ss cup holders, I can't appreciate a big Bimini enough , $18k though? I had no idea that the price premium is that high. Still add In the electronic throttle controls and automated / integrated ballast system and its sounds like over $10k easy before installation. Plus the e is the flag ship, so $$$ nothing new, the best is expensive.

Ar240 does come with dual batteries, even with the extras, 18k is a lot. One item I wasn't concerned about not having was the shower but now wish I had it on my AR for cleaning off the swim platform after the kids were done fishing

The 242X is loaded

E-series - Digital controls with Driver Control (like perfect pass)
Canopy Top with Solar Panels
Triple ballast with triple pumps
Tower speakers (cans and Wetsounds bar)
Subwoofer
upgraded carpet
upgraded upholstery with color coordinating stripes

The X does not have a transom shower due to the ballast bags

There are two threads under the 2016 Yamaha section you should check out. The 242x review and the E-series post (sorry...am at the beach or I'd link them for ya).

The e-series boats are nice! I'm buying an X because I want the 1000 watt stereo, the electronic throttles are awesome, the ballast and the upgraded interior. All worth having installed at the factory!
