28" Black Grouper / 36" dolphin

Our scout troop went to a camp in the keys last week and one day they took us fishing. My son caught a 28" Black Grouper. Another scout on our boat caught a 36" dolphin. That night we camped on an island with no electricity and had a nice fresh fish dinner.

I caught (I forget the exact dimensions-my rough guess) a 20" black grouper while fishing with my brother, and he says

....nah, can't keep it, has to be 22"

I toss it back, and go get a beer.....while getting my beer, I see the fishing reg list he has attached to his cooler....black grouper....18"...... GRRR

According to this it's 24" in NC. FLA is 22" and so is the Gulf from what I've read.

You've actually reminded me of what happened more accurately (was in Florida). I caught a Tiger Grouper. He had memorized the black grouper size--22" as you point out. What I caught was 20" limit.....I was looking at the photos of the various groupers...and walked it over to him and said...."Isn't this what I just caught?".....(not a black grouper).....D'OH....and we'd actually caught 3-4 of these (Tiger Grouper) and tossed them back!

Very cool!!! I made a ton of memories with my dad fidhing, when I was young and lived at home we fished all the time. Loved it .. here is a goliath grouper I caught on Marco island Fla. A couple years ago. It was 40" and around 67 l bs. I am headed there tomorrow night, can't wait to do more fishing. His tail is curled in the pic so he doesn't look as long as he was....
