Boat Stuff #4 Robertson Bits

Sorry. This post is really old. I don’t have these anymore.

Out of curiosity, what are these needed for (or used to be needed for back in the day of '18)?

They were needed for 230 series boats and maybe others.

Yeah the #4 Robertson bit is for the stainless steel screws that secure the fuel tank cover in the cockpit floor of my 2007 SX230. Can’t get a #4 over here and Lawsons doesn’t ship to Australia. More research required.

If you guys haven't watched "Mitchell's versus the Machines" on Netflix.......you seriously need to. The #4 Robertson head no slip screwdriver is a KEY part of the story.

Grab the kids and have a good laugh. Guarantee you'll never think about a #4 Robertson head no slip but the same ever again!

we have a post on here somewhere that a member found a phillps head replacement, posted pictures and exact measurements,

Thanks BigT, this was the kit I got from Amazon. I tried to use them and they seemed to strip the bit heads. Reading some of the other posts about undoing the fuel tank screws, I have to admit that I didn't tap them down with a hammer before trying to undo them. I also didn't use the method of loosening a little then tightening a little and so on. I'll have to give it another go, thanks for responding to my post, cheers

Good to know, I just got a set but haven't tried to use them on the screws yet. Did you us them with a drill or by hand when they stripped? The tapping down recommendation seems like it might help to prevent the stripping.

I was using a Milwaukee cordless drill when they stripped. Looking at my screw heads some of the Robertson "squares" were already a little worn, the previous owner may have attempted to get them out. I'll have another go next week, my wife has put me in quarantine as I've just caught the dreaded Covid for the 1st time. Good luck getting yours out.

I've just ordered the ARES tool as per your link, looks like it should do the trick. What a pain your experience was, plenty of patience required but well worth it in the end by the look of your photos. Thanks again fro the info and thread

Please let everyone know how that impact works. I am hoping it will break the screws loose without stripping or breaking.
