96 speedster low rpm problem

Hello friends. I recently purchased a 96 sea doo speedster I have been out 6 or 7 times now with no issues and the motors performing great but yesterday as i was heading in the port motor started making sort of a rattling, pinging type noise almost similar to how it sounds when i start it up in my driveway and i also wasnt able to get the rpms over 4000 i figured the motor was probably cooked but it ran like that for the whole hour and a half trip home and started right back up after i got back to the dock just wondering if anyone has any ideas what this could be...
