ok...i know what @jcyamaharider thinks...but what is the concensus of the members if changing out impellers really can make a difference with the hole shot power. i'm not concerned about losing top end by a couple of mph but really would like a bit more off the line. i've looked at the past posts but would like a fresh opinion of those that have made the change.

Yup
But have them pitched for low end. Send your stock ones and have them pitched down a bit.
You could find some 12/16s from lower powered skiis. Hole shot would be crazy.

See......:p:p:p

Yes in my old boat it made a huge diferance in pulling power !!!! Ask @ar240owner's Wife !!

@ar240owner . Mark...you going to upgrade the new boat??

Yep the 240 will get new impellers !!!!

I'm going to give my opinion here.

The MR-1 boats may benefit from aftermarket impellers, I think it is likely based on old research by Group K. The MR-1 OEM impeller blades are relatively short and the prop design is similar to Skat Trak, probably superior, as well as Solas props such as Concord and Dynafly.

I do not believe you will find an aftermarket impeller that will give you better hole shot /less cavitation than the OEM in 1.8l boats (like the engines in your boat). These impellers have the longest blades and are very nicely tuned to fit the 1.8l engine power/torque curve, across the whole range. Their quality is not that great when it comes to the material, those are relatively soft and relatively easy to damage. But also the least expensive of the bunch, by a long shot, and pitched and spec-ed just right out of the box.

Whoever tells you that they have a secret formula for the best pitch (e.g. Impros) - it is just not well documented at all. How many twin or single 1.8l and MR-1 Yamaha BOATS have (Impros and others) tested their magic pitches on, side-by-side with OEM?

Who on this forum tested their impellers by swapping OEM with aftermarket and running some kind of test runs? I would like to know. Most of the time it is "I got these new shiny aftermarket impellers and they are so much better" - it doesn't cut it for me. Again - my 0.02 only.

@swatski. Thanks for your opinion. You may have saved me some money! Or at least direct it elsewhere

I did, my boat pulls 1200 rpms less with full ballast and the aftermarket impellers. With stock impellers it will barely pull the wife or myself out of the water. I also noticed a smoother feel from the impellers being balanced.

Based on my recent experience replacing the stock impellers with aftermarket units from Impros:

Do Solas custom pitched impellers make a difference in hole shot / cavitation? Yes.

Is the difference noticeable and worth the effort and expense? Not unless you are really paying attention and your performance improvement expections are reasonable.

I noticed that the Solas props don't cavitate as much as the stock ones did when moving the throttles from idle to WOT quickly. That is, the Solas feel and sound like they are pushing water/ hooking up faster but but for the cost, down time and risks involved with swapping props it's hard for me to say the performance improvement was worth it.

If any Shelbyville participants have after market impellers with the newer engines...I'll see if I can hitch a ride and see if I feel a difference.

You are running with MR-1s, right?

What was the shape of you OEM impellers when you swapped them? Were you changing them to experiment or because of poor performance?

Yep, so you are just saying 1.8s only?
Yes. That is based on my extensive experience with a 1.8l single, and a lot of research published by racers and enthusiasts on the jetski side of things.

Group K published a report on MR-1s, it was some time ago, their conclusion was that the aftermarkets were superior if not by a whole lot. I believe Skat Trak was their official recommendation, but that was before the latest Solas props offerings.

Solas and Skats are also made of MUCH harder steel, or whatever the alloy is, it seems. When you try to bend a Solas or Skat vs OEM, huge difference.

Well yeah, stock is aluminum and after market is stainless

I'll have new ones before shelbyville :) I think with full ballast is where we are seing the most diferance !!!
