You want the antenna as high as possible for the best range (apparently max height is more important than radio power), you also want it as far away from any GPS antennas as possible as the two can interfere with one another. Here is a good article on the subject:
I have my 3 foot stainless mounted in the grab handle hole at the rear of the t-top. Lots of height. My radio is mounted in the lower storage compartment of the console. I'd recommend mounting it higher - hard to hear and see.
