Just wondering how many brothers or sisters are out there.
I'm a career with 18 years, currently a captain on our 100' pierce rear mount platform.
Small department (4 stations) just north of Atlanta GA.

Speak up smoke-eaters!

Not yet but I have been applying at the places around here. My brother is one and he really turned me on to the idea. Seems like a no brainer to me! 24 on and 48 off sounds like more time with the family, and at least one day out of the three to do a day trip type of thing. Get to help people, both with lives and homes etc. Strong brotherhood sounds great too! Pay in Illinois is really good, but I live in Indiana so I'm trying to jump borders.
Biggest problem getting in for me is that I don't have EMT/Paramedic yet. Working 2 jobs now so working only one with those kinda hours and benefits is soooo appealing. I work construction and my brother basically asked me wtf am i doing?

:winkingthumbsup" Been in the business for 27 years. Last 20 with LA County FD.

Speedling,
Best of luck to you, the hiring process can take some time, don't loose sight of your goal.
The fire service is a great career, you won't get rich but you can be comfortable and genuinely enjoy your work.

Dennis,
LA county, big department!
Thanks for your years of service brother!

@Evildwarf look me up if you're ever in LA. We're close to LAX. Here's a pic of the station that I've been working at for the last many years. Would love to give you a look around. image.jpg

Looks good, if I'm ever in your first due I'll look you up.
I recently took a class from an LA county BC, Chief Alkonis (I think that's right) on flow path and door control, good stuff.
I grew up watching Emergency and the flags flying out front of 127's house remind me of the station scenes from the old tv show. Very cool Dennis!
Below is the engine from my house (the 2 house) at work.
If you ever get over to the Atlanta area give me a holler brother.
