image.jpeg At the end of last season I broke our starboard side steering cable rod. Killed the end of the season. The part never even became available until this February. image.jpeg image.jpeg image.jpeg I already had TV's installed. I knew Cobra fins had a system that connected the whole steering system together. So I had jet boat pilot make me a new port side fin with the cut out and order the rod from cobra fins. This will take the pressure off the port side steering and equal it out.

I've always been a HUGE fan of the TVs. I've run TV's in my previous AR190 and now in my 212x.
Will and the JetBoatPilot crew are a huge asset to this forum and Yamaha boats in general. BUT - with the new boats - I like the way Cobra connects the 2 buckets.

The cobra magnum A K series "first picture" not only balances the system to place the work load on both sides of the original factory steering system it also helps with low speed assistance and HIGH SPEED steering since the hulls large keel resists turning at speed.
I also listed the extra tie rod kit separately "second picture" after several people on this site suggested it.
The tie rods I make are all stainless steel including the ends. I also include all the necessary stainless steel hardware

and if you check my facebook page I am getting ready to release the cobra fangs , an add on upgrade for the Ultimate and Magnum steering systems . I don't even have the instructions finished and people are already wanting them

Cobras system looks great. I would have gone that route beginning 2015 had I known!

Looks good @Just1more let me know how it performs with the new mod.

Thank you!
For those of you who are not familiar with the Magnum A K series system it was specifically designed for the 24 foot boats equipped with the rudder from the factory. It ties in both of the nozzles to operate the steering so as to avoid stressing out the right side nozzle and steering cable, it also provides adjustable, predictable and reliable tempered aircraft aluminum fins to the outside of each nozzle for better response and handling at all speeds. This complete system is available on my web page WWW.COBRAJETSTEERING.COM for the low price of $324.25 with free shipping in the U S A and very affordable shipping to Canada under the free trade agreement.

Well.... It happened again! Broke the starboard steering cable. Just happened to be swimming around the swim platform and started feeling around and sure as shit the rod broke again. I did add the port side rod that I bought from cobra jet steering so I can still steer both engines. Just called dealer to find out if they can get the part in this week and repaired. It was back ordered the last time. What in the hell could be causing this?

Dealer just called...... Cable back ordered until August 2nd. I have the system tied together now and hope the port steering cable can hold out. Any thoughts?

I can't help but wonder if tying the system together might cause the cables to fight each other.

The first time it broke they were not tied together. I only tied them together this summer so that IF it happened again I could still steer with both buckets.

Is this a known issue? It seems like this is happening a lot due to the fact they are backordered. How many hours on the boat? Any binding while in use?
I had the TV on my 192 but I don't feel the need with the AR240.

Look on your cable for numbers. Those cables should be standard Teleflex cables like in all past model boats.

Teleflex cables can be purchased straight away.

@Rob9550 its a 2015. Under 50 hours. Thinking of removing the fins. Had them on my 190 just figured why not on the 240. Never any binding.

@Murf'n'surf its a warranty issue so not sure if the dealer has to go a certain route? It was back ordered over the winter also when they ordered it the first time it broke.

It's probably a $30 part you could hand your dealer for them to install. Or tell them to find the exact Teleflex cable and bypass the "Yamaha" cable which is just the Teleflex cable marked up a bunch of $'s. This would save your boating season, but if that's not a concern, wait on the warranty.

I'm at 115 hours with no cable issues. I'll be anxious to hear what the problem ends up being.

I'm going to call them back tomorrow and with your idea. Will let you know what they say!

Sorry, but I think that this will be a long post.
First, from personal experience as a "buyer" of cables in a past job, many cable companies will have a 30 to 60 day lead time on orders. So, if Yamaha did not set their inventory system up to hold an inventory for the item in question (or if a buyer failed to do their job maintaining an inventory), you're stuck with their supplier's lead time, which shows up in a system as "back ordered" until some actually arrive into Yamaha's inventory. So, there may not be a cataclysmic problem with units failing in the field if this is just a supply management issue.
Second, from personal experience as a quality engineer, if the cables aren't failing cataclysmically, the root cause of your failure is either a "bad batch of cables, with a problem with the metallurgy", or the cables are being exposed to an environment for which they are not qualified to endure. With respect to environment, perhaps the additional forces from the TVs added to the keel/rudder are too much for the cable.
Maybe a new post should be started to poll those who have had failed steering cables?

My wife and I are also wondering if the fins are adding to the stress and breaking the rod. Wouldn't you think that there would be more people talking about that if it's an issue? I can't be the only ar240 2015 with fins....
