3 rope swings in one cove. Huge oak trees. All cut ! I can't explain how pissed I am right now.20200722_123133.jpg

I doubt the Corps of Engineers did that. Down on Table Rock Lake they’re sticklers and pass out hefty fines it sounds like for messing with trees on their property around the water line.

The cove they were is is corp property with no house around.

Agree that it sucks. Pretty intent on keeping their risk/liability minimized. We have a spot on the lake where kids died that has been cordoned off where you could jump down into the lake. (rocky face on the way down) I’m okay with it, coz I tend to be more risk averse.

Years ago some risk takers launched off the Sunshine Skyway in a homemade gondola. It did not go well. It is not possible to protect us from ourselves.

We all boat. Boating is inherently dangerous. Life is inherently dangerous, get over it and stop sueing the deepest pockets. Your stupidity does not entitle you to someone elses stuff. If I hear "be safe" again it will be too soon. Rant over...carry on.

Probably Corp; but perhaps someone in a bass boat with a chainsaw who wanted to reclaim a cove and add a new fish attraction site to the lake? Two birds with one stone. Not trying to hate on the fishing crowd at all; but I have come across a significant number who seem to feel they own the lake.

Some bass fisherman probably cut it down to retrieve a 14$ Rapala crankbait lol.

Ah... I misunderstood. Didn’t realize the trees were the home of the swings. I thought it was outrage over a big oak tree being cut. I see your perspective now, and agree with your assessment of the culprit. Lol

As the Corp will remind you every time on lake Cumberland in KY, recreational boating is a nice byproduct. The lake was built for flood control and power generation. If we boaters don’t like it they can just shut the lake down entirely. All shoreline belongs to the Corp and only the Corp. I look at it as they let a lot of stuff go that they don’t have to so I won’t complain when small stuff happens.

The cops cut them down on our lake. I talked to one about it after we shuttled a guy from the swing to an ambulance after he dropped off the platform and smacked the rocks. They get so many calls for injuries it's easier to just cut them down than keep coming out to rescue people.

I agree that it likely wasn't the Corp that cut them down. They are pretty serious about ANY vegetation being cut near the water line. My "home lake" is Greers Ferry here in Arkansas, and my grandfather had a house/cabin on it. The Corp are very serious about cutting vegetation and building anything too close to the waterline (erosion, pollution, etc.). I doubt they would have cut down those big oak trees. Most likely somebody who didn't like the rope swings in that cove. Corp is likely not happy those trees were cut down!

I'm on same lake.. tbis is the cove we had meet up in last year. A rope swing had been there for years and would get cut and out back up.

Same night tbey cut the swing one was back up.. apparebtly they decided to cut the tree this time

On the Allatoona Lake the corp would go around and cut the rope swings down. Maybe they decided this was a better solution since they had do this all the time! We never put them up but we sure used them. Just like the old days HA! I wish the would concentrate on maintaining the water level. They suck at that! I have lived on two and we hated that part!

Coming from a military family whose grandfather was a military engineer I know in times of conflict they suffer atrocious mortality rates. Imagine trying to build a bridge under constant fire. Where I live the first time there is a flood or fire they are on the front lines. Many times they are told to do things by politicians or local elected officials that they might not agree with but don't have a vote on......just my 2 cents.

I know on Lake Cumberland maintaining the water level to avoid flooding downstream is the #1 priority. Now that means for boaters the water level changes throughout the year. It is typically lowest in late September as they draw it down to be ready to absorb winter rain/snow. After the flooding issues 2 years ago they have been drawing it down sooner and more aggressively the past 2 summers and by early august it will be 25ft lower than what it was in April.
