So as the title says I'm buying a Yamaha jet boat. It'll be the first boat I've owned personally, but definitely not my first boat experience.

My question is this. I'm about to pull the trigger on a 2014 212X. I dig the 1.8s and all the wakeboard accessories included. What should I be on the look out for? Any known issues with this year? The boat currently has 95 hours on it and has seen salt 1 time. He assured me he flushed and this was back 3 years ago. What's all included with this boat I need to ask for?

Thanks for all the help and advice. I appreciate it!!

Best of luck to you. Don't know much about older models, but welcome.

No particular "known issues" that I'm aware of. They are very reliable boats but most all boats will have some little issues here and there. If it has been well maintained it should be solid.

Are you buying this boat with a significant focus on wakeboarding/watersports? I'm just asking since you mentioned all the "wakeboard accessories".

Not necessarily focused on wakeboarding, but more of a spread of pulling tubes, wakeboarding, cruising and being with the family on the lake. The seller is asking 35k and from what I've seen that's a pretty good price for a well taken care of 212X. Correct me if I'm wrong of course!

Spoke with seller today. Offered him $33500 and he said he won't take a penny under asking $35k. What does everyone think? Should I pull the trigger since it has the upgraded 1.8s? Does anyone with this boat have any experience I should know about?

Appreciate the insights.

Make sure you get a water test before buying! And make sure you can get those clean out plugs out and back in easy too! Should be pretty safe with only 95 hours but I’d definitely want a water test.

Yeah I just spoke with him and he agreed to a water test this weekend with no hesitation. He seems like a good guy. But boats are boats regardless. So I'm trying to be cautious. Thanks!

Don’t want to rain on your parade, but you should google or search here in this forum for timing chain issues on the 1.8L engines. I believe it effects 2010-2015 engines. I believe it’s a small percentage of engines effected, but still something you should be aware of before purchase. From my understanding, there is no hour limit “concern”, as it can happen at any time and cause a catastrophic engine failure.

Appreciate it. I'll do that now. Thanks!

Went to go look at the boat today. NOW WAY will I be buying. Super dirty everywhere scratches all over the underside, rust showing on all anchor points, and a few tears in the seats. And when I asked I was told 'nothing is wrong with the boat." Not my definition of nothing. Oh well, on to the next! Looking in the TX area if anyone is selling.

Thanks

@RDUBPhoto Bummer. Be diligent. You will find one!

Good on you for checking out the particulars. One of my personal tips when buying something used is to keep my head on a swivel. I look at the way their home is maintained. Is it clean? Exterior tidy? Is shit laying in the yard? Are their vehicles clean? How does the garage look? Kids well behaved? (LOL). If it looks like a scene from Joe Dirt, I'm outta there!

Keeping things maintained is a state of mind, and a personal conviction. You can quickly get a grasp on how people maintain their belongings based on observation. The fact the boat was dirty when you went and looked was a huge red flag. Anybody/everybody knows you at least clean your items before attempting to sell. You can bet that maintenance was never done correctly, and probably lots of hack fixes/modifications. No thanks!

My advice is don't settle. Keep an eye out for the little details. Talk is bullshit. Your eyes and gut are your best guidance.

Good luck in the hunt! You'll find a good one!

I’ve seen boats for sale that are just filthy. If they don’t bother to clean the boat for photos or when they want to sell it, that tells you all you need to know about how they took care of the boat.
That being said. The guy we bought our boat from was wiping dirt off the boat while we were inspecting it  But the house was nicely maintained.
I mean how much could they screw up in 1 trip???

Yeah he was a bit off to me. Said it had only seen salt once but there was a good amount of noticable salt corrosion. Plus the dirt all over the place and the fact he has never had a cover on it didn't sit well with me. Oh well, I'm going to be patient. It'll happen soon.

Appreciate everyone's advice. Cannot wait to be behind the wheel of one!

I realize you have passed on this boat, but to clarify, what did he mean by "Upgraded 1.8's" Unless he was talking specifically about doing the timing chain up grade, there is no real upgrade to the engines.

For future reference, the timing chain issue is long debated, but your primary concern should be late build 2014 and early build 2015 models with 1.8ltr engines. Yes it can happen to any of them, but the only notable quantity to justify a factory Technical Service Bulletin, was that time frame.

Good luck

I believe he said "upgraded" because the other 21s in this time frame had the 1100ccs and not the 1.8s? Not sure but I definitely passed based on condition. My wife knows me better than anyone and after I drove 4.5 hours and she saw my face she said she couldn't believe I was so calm and nice about the situation. I just wish people would be upfront about things. Clearly there were issues and he said the boat had nothing wrong with it. It's funny how some think this and others see tons of problems.

Oh well, off to the next one. Appreciate the input. This one was a 2013 build according to the paperwork so I think the timing chain would've been okay. Either way I was adding a warranty to help me sleep at night.

I know you didn’t buy it- but the curious part for
Me (off the description you gave initially) was the hours on the engines. Average of 1.5 hours per year????? Odd and super low. Like I would think it sat unused and that can be as bad as. I wouldn’t have bought it for that reason alone, IMHO.

Hope you find a good one- they are out there ;-)

Good for you looking at the build date! Nice work. Smart shopper there! Another will come along, and you will know a good deal when you see it by looking at many!

You are 100% correct. I was blown away at the hours and the condition. Almost like somehow the miles rolled over and restarted based on how bad it was. I'm pretty picky but am okay with some elbow grease to get it clean and up to my standards but this was complete neglect. I took off the cushion on one side to look at the ballast and there were so many leaves I could barely see the bag! First off how do they even get in there?? Secondly why not spend 600-700 and buy a nice cover for your new investment? Just mind blown.

Well I ended up with a 2014 Yamaha AR210. Has some nice upgrades (dual batteries, charger, auto switch, sub, amps, speakers, Bluetooth and GPS/Fish finder). Happy it worked out the way it did because this one was well taken care of and in excellent shape.

Thank you everyone for the advice and guidance. Appreciate a strong community like the one on here.
