Music.
For some it's at the top of the list of things we need on the boat.
Others, meh, not so much. ( I don't know many at this end of the spectrum unless they are fishing)

How many times have you launched and thought to yourself...self, I wish I had taken the time to put together a few new playlists? How many of you are listening to music you put together a couple of years ago, or worse, trying to stream an on-line radio "station"?

When done properly, music can turn an ordinary trip into a magical remembery. I'll always look back on the trip when my daughter actually orchestrated the entire day. Soft, gentle music while launching so we didn't disturb the neighbors. Gradually building as we motored up river to prepare for a few runs on pure glass. Then it was an all out, fist pumping crescendo as we "Hit It" with the first rider getting up and our run back down river was awesome.

I still have those cd's...somewhere.

I wonder if there's a way to share this stuff....dropbox?

Who's the genius? How can we share our best playlists ?

Even I've gone digital so it can't be that difficult.

Well, I think the real question is,
If you can still remember how that music used to make you smile, and that if you could only make those people dance,
maybe they'd be happy for a while?

Music iis a big part of our lake experience. Always adding new songs.
It's a song never complete.

Sometimes music and sometimes if we are out in the evening and the lake is very still I just like the sound of the lake.

@Glassman , I think @Trevor Shipman is onto something...
https://news.spotify.com/us/2008/01/30/collaborative-playlists/

"Anyway, here at Spotify we believe that sharing is the golden path. Therefore we released collaborative playlists today. That means that not only are you able to share playlists with others, you can let them edit the shared playlists as well. We would love your input on it so try it out andlet us know what you think!

In order to turn on collaboration for a playlist, right-click (or Ctrl-click on the Mac) the list and select Collaborative Playlist. Then copy the link to the playlist and send it to a friend.

When your friend clicks on the link, it opens in Spotify and your collaborative playlist is added. Now you can both make changes, which will appear on both of your screens instantly. You can identify a collaborative playlist by the unlocked padlock icon next to it.

You can share the playlist with any number of people, but remember that anyone who gets the link will be able to alter your playlist, as well as pass the link on to others. There is currently no way to give only specific users the right to alter a collaborative playlist, other than by controlling the access to the link. The link is the key to the playlist.

You can, however, turn off the collaborativity of the playlist the same way you turned it on. Then only you will be able to alter the playlist, but everyone who has got the link will still be able to view and play the list.
"

Ok, aside from the word "collaborativity" (huh??) it sounds like a great starting point - could even have multiple lists: Jetboaters Rock, Jetboaters Country, Jetboaters Loud, etc... Music is personal so I think various genres would be good (personally, I think we can skip Jetboaters Opera, for example - unless it's some Wagner from Apocalypse Now, since that seems appropriate!!)

But if the "collaborativity" can be turned on or off, could/should one of the moderators do the initial setup in order to retain control of shutting it down if it gets out of hand?

My wife puts the music together for our boat trips. She creates a summer playlist every year. Being the father of 3 kids, 2 girls and a boy. I am so glad that the kids are in their teen years and love some of the better 80's music. It was rough when the girls were into Taylor Swift and Big Time Rush. I had to pull my hat down a bit and hide my face around the docks ;).

We started to do this radical thing on the boat called listening to the radio. There used to be these people called djs whose job it was to solve the problem of finding what somgs in what order to listen to in order to enhance the strange experience called life. It turns out now they often volunteer at small local and college radio stations for free. So, just make sure the radio station is a non I Heart Radio / I Heart Media / Clear Channel owned station. Their playlists are putrid by corporate design- songs picked by committee to sell businesses ads and not offend customers by stirring emotion. No live djs of any kind. The good news is I Heart * are hedge fund managed and have been saddled with tens of billions of dollars of debt, so they will probably be broken apart shortly and stations can ironically return to local control and programming....RANT

@Glassman @msavold -- Spotify is my savior on the water. Can create playlists, as many playlists as you want, open them for others to add to them, close them and make them private, etc. Even better is making them available offline, no data, no signal, no nothing needed, just your phone on a good charge.

Have a few playlists for just cruising @ night, some for throwbacks, some for when my father and I are out and want the best of Joel or the Stones, and some that are open for friends to add too over the course of the summer. I am a big country music fan myself.

Spotify even has pre-created playlists you can follow and make available offline too.

Can't go wrong for 10.09 (+ or - for tax in your state, CT it's 10.09 a month) and basically having all of iTunes at your fingertips, of course, less those artists that believe Spotify is a violation of their property/believe it screws over the artist, what have you. (Taylor Swift, some others).

The collaborative playlist can be an awesome idea for the forum, but good idea to assign it to someone who can shut it down pending it gets out of hand. Those with premium access would be able to skip unlimited songs on any JetBoaters playlist, and those with the free access would still be able to listen to the playlist, just limited skips and probably not be able to add to them.

Was out last night listening to some good old Billy Joel live @ Shea Stadium; really need to save my pennies to upgrade this SX 192's sound.

@jcyamaharider I blame Jerry for corrupting my ears in Shelbyville last year. I still need to send him the bill for about $3800. Damn you, Jerry.

On a positive note...we always say surfer gets to pick the tunes. I heart radio is the best.

We have Sirius this year @bobbie so you can get some tunes on that you like.

When I'm by myself it's AC/DC Thunderstruck!! Still makes me smile!! :D

So after reading this thread I deleted Pandora and have been looking at Spotify, the biggest attraction is the availability of offline.
How does that work? Say I want the Texas Red Dirt channel offline, does it save all those songs to my phone? I'm just not grasping how it works exactly.

@Wayloncle "All offline playlists are downloaded in an encrypted form and are playable only through Spotify, but these tracks can be synced on up to three different devices — so if you're using Spotify on an additional computer or cellphone, any tracks marked for offline listening sync to that device, too." So, yeah, find the Texas Red Dirt playlist, click on Follow, and then right click to make "available off line" and you're good for a month on up to three devices. Go online with any of the three devices and you're good for another month.

And if you cancel premium in the non-boating season you just lose the offline access (but not anything you've saved) and get the crappy ads back - but you can just sign up again the following season.

Also, apparently there's a limit of 3,300 songs per playlist... My "Boating" list is up to 64 songs for 4 hrs and 14 minutes so, since I'm not planning a trans-atlantic crossing in my 240 I think I'm good with the limit!

Is anyone using Google Play instead of Spotify? Gets better reviews but I found a bunch of artists that I like that I can't seem to find on Google Play. Is that just me?

Cool! Thanks, I think ima do it.

I have Sirius/XM in my truck, I'm tired of the same 12 or so songs over and over, and I can't find a radio station that I like to listen to without flipping stations every two minutes, but I've found a couple playlists on Spotify that I could listen to for a long time and using it on the boat is is a bonus!

Thread creep:
I've got Sirius too and since my Pilot doesn't have an AUX or USB connector to the stereo ('06) I've been keeping it but I've been thinking seriously of cancelling - repetition AND commercials? For this I pay money? [I find myself listening to NHL in season and Jeff and Larry's Comedy almost as much as the 5 or 6 music channels I like.]
:end creep
No way I'd spend money for another Sirius account in the boat - plenty of other alternatives!

We use a combo of XM and my wife's play list. XM came with 3 free months and then I have an email for 5 months for $20. If they start repeating songs I just have the wife play DJ. So far, so good!

Speaking of music....this is a little off topic...I can not select anything on my head unit, as in I can't change to a CD or even change FM channels. Was caught in a downpour the other day and wondered if the rain may have done something?? Anyway, this is the same unit that came with the boat and was wondering if anyone has had the same experience??

Have you tried removing the faceplate and cleaning/drying the contacts? Also, there's a reset button behind the faceplate too. Hope that helps you out.
