Changing room door hinge fastener

I noticed one of the four screws securing the hinges to my changing room door was missing. I obtained a new screw (yes, I bought it from Yamaha despite the cost) - but the new screw does not engage the door. Looking at the back of the door, three of the hinge screws appear to have some sort of hexagonal metallic plug that secures the door to the hinge. The screw I'm trying to replace does not have this metallic plug, just a hole that is too big for the screw. Can anyone explain what is going on here? Thanks
