I want to check my oil level but am not sure if I should do it on the water or the trailer. What is the best practice guys?

I'm a little OCD when I do this, but I use an angle finder on the top of the motor and level the boat with the tongue jack (boat on trailer). Zero degrees! LOL. It doesn't need to be this accurate, but you get the idea.

what i'd like to know is how in the hell one can tell where (fresh) oil is on the dipstick?? i've never been able to feel confident about it.

It is very hard to see when fresh!

Reflection from the sun is your friend. Plunge the dipstick, wipe off. Rinse/repeat 2-3 times. Pull dipstick, place in sunlight, rotate, change angle, until you can see that sweet honey!

Its simple. Pull dipstick and lay it flat on paper towel, you will see the level. Oil will be on the towel showing your level

This method will absolutely work, IF... the dipstick tube is clear of excess residual oil. You don't want an oil streak up the stick throwing off your reading. Dipstick should be plunged and cleaned at least 3X (IMO) before taking a reading.

Where should the oil level be on the dipstick first hole, second hole or in between?
