Code 231

I looked all over and I cannot find a 231 either. I find a list for waverunners, but only one # above 200. Yamaha WaveRunner Fault Code List [Chart] - JetDrift Yours is not a fault code.

Yeah thats all I find too. It ran fine for 4hrs now it runs rough and engine shakes at idle. Lost 1000Rpm also. I was hoping a 02 since I fog the engines. 4star engine.

I believe 231 is specific to Yamaha while SPN3052 is generic covering 231 to 234 at a minimum.

I would not be surprised if it were a low battery or a weak ground.

I will take any recommendations. I put 2 new batteries in after this alarm. I will start moving around checking engine grounds and so forth.

Is the code sticking around?

If so perhaps disconnect the batteries for 15 minutes to see if the codes will clear.

Yes sticks around, unhooked batteries. Start stop 5 times. I'll have to start checking it out otherwise take it in.......

Do you have a YDS? That looks like the shop manual first step... Might give you more info.

I had this code on my first trip out but mine ran fine. I tried all the reset things also with out success. I finally cleared it while trying to connect a can doo to read the codes because there wasn’t one one the screen. The directions said to disconnect port tach which was wrong for a 17. But while trying to do so and powering on the key the a few times the code cleared and I haven’t had it come back. If you’re idling rough I would suspect a spark plug or coil. I’ve since changed my plugs which I do every year and still no repeat.

Update on this finally! I have been having issues for a while and too stubborn to take in. Not sure someone would have been totally honest and not a parts changer. I have been a mechanic/service tech for 25yrs and have never seen clean cut wires inside insulation(seen a lot of wire issues). I think possibly the crimp tool Yamaha used cracked the wires and they finally gave.
Please note this was an intermittent no spark that caused the 231 ignition code.
