Compact Beach Anchor

We generally anchor close to the beach, but I’ve been concerned about the boat hull rubbing against the sand, so I bought a small, secondary anchor just to keep the boat from wandering while anchoring using the primary anchor. I didn’t want to install a keel guard, and I was very happy with the compact size of the anchor that I ultimately found. It’s just a second anchor to stabilize the boat at anchor, so it’s typically tied to one of the stern cleats when it’s being used. When we’re not using it, it lays very nicely in a spare Type II life jacket in the aft seat storage compartment. The life jacket keeps the anchor from bouncing around and damaging the storage compartment interior. I also liked the very compact 1/4” coiled line that I got from Walmart. I’m guessing that I spent $16 for the anchor and $11 for the line. Perhaps someone may find this useful. Below are pictures of the anchor and line, as well as a picture of one of the spots where we typically anchor on Cape Cod.

Aloha,

Your post just touched a nerve with me about my anchor situation. I mangled the anchor (danforth) that fit the anchor locker and ended up getting another which doesnt fit at all and I've been stowing it on the bow cushion (which I don't like). Your posting that you've been carrying your 2nd anchor in a life jacket in the storage area is brilliant (face palm for me not to see it). I'm going to have my mangled one re-welded and fit back in the anchor locker and will from now on store the 2nd one amongst the life jackets in the bow storage area. Bravo!

Just a suggestion based on use/and a little experience. I could never get our slip ring anchor to set, especially on a weedy bottom. I replaced it with an 8# Danforth style anchor. WEST MARINE Traditional Fluke Anchors | West Marine

Also...you need more than 50 of 1/4" nylon anchor line. Even though you "anchor close to the beach". there could be that one time when you suck up weeds and have to shut down to clear. If you are in 20-30 ft. of water bobbing in the waves with 50' of line, it will not hold if you need it to. In the ocean around the Cape you will need some chain preferably 5-6' of 1/4" galv chain min. and 150' of nylon line 5/16" dia. I like to set it and forget it. I know your boat is smaller than mine, but better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.



Another option would be a box anchor.

I recommend having at least 100' of line and a chain leader for proper holding otherwise you won't get it to hold the way it should.
