I obtained a GPS speedometer as for some reason mine became stuck on about 5 mph and didn't move either way, I decided that when i fitted it i will do the steering wheel at the same time which allows me plenty of room to work with the wheel out of the way to fit the speedometer so i amalgamated the 2 in this post just to make life a bit easier, It may give you a few ideas about Antenna position if you decide to get a GPS speedometer and also it's really handy to have a Digital Hour readout on it for servicing time etc saves connecting the Laptop to the system, Ok this is the way i did it.
Use an Alan Key and remove the screws around the center of the wheel
Remove the wheel
Undo the nut holding the center boss in place
Remove the center Boss and clean it i used new washers when i refitted it, Now onto the GPS Speedometer.
Remove the 4 screws holding the dash cluster and pull it forward you now have loads of room to work, Remove the old speedometer ,These GPS speedometers are easy to fit, There was 2 lives 1 earth and the Antenna, 1 x live for the system 1 x live for the back light 1 x earth and the Antenna.
Use a test meter and pick up an ignition switched live at the back of the helm
Use your test meter and find the wire for the back light at the back of the speedometer connector, You can put insulation tape around this connector as you wont be needing it unless you want to revert back to the old speedometer, when you've located the correct wire splice into it about an inch behind the connector and make sure you insulate the spliced connection,
I drilled a small hole near the bottom of where the windscreen support rod attaches and i fed the GPS Speedometer antenna cable through there as it can be zip tied to the support bar for neatness along with the cable for the Garmin, When i fitted the Garmin i used the support bar and welded a small bracket onto it to support the Garmin it keeps it nicely visible without obstructing other gauges or access to the bow seating.
I used one of the screen support rod screws to hold the Antenna it was in a perfect position to give maximum reception What remaining cable you have left over from the Antenna you can wrap up and put behind the helm as the frequency is so high that it will not be affected by wrapped up cable adding capacitance.
You can see the bracket i made to hold the Garmin and both cables Zip tied to the screen support rod, After feeding your cable through connect it to the GPS Speedometer and tape up the remainder of the cable.
Ok all connected and working, it takes about 30 seconds to locate and register the satellites and the Hour meter is working also, Ok back to the wheel.
There were many different wheels to choose from, Just a tip if you decide to change the wheel take the center boss with you just to make sure it will accept the new wheel and everything fits ok.
Also check the Yamaha badge in the middle fits well mine didn't and i had to gently remove some plastic as the badge was bigger than the hole in the center cap, About 30 minutes of gently rubbing the inside of the center cap with a small grinding stone did the job and it was a really good fit.
This was the wheel i chose the grey matched the interior and as you can see the badge fitted well in the center, I fitted new stainless screws also as the old ones never looked attractive, I hope this proves useful and please let me know if you think I've missed anything.
ok all finished you can see the Speedo Antenna just above the GPS, Oh i nearly forgot make sure your jet outlets are in line before you fit the wheel so it remains inline when the Boat is going straight.
