Found this on the catamaran today.
Some of you may know that we bought a 1991 PDQ 36 sailing catamaran, an old cat. Well, she is on the move now. We started yesterday from Shaws Boatyard in Dighton Mass. down the Taunton River to Mount Hope Bay and my old college/university, Roger Williams, past Newport, RI then hard to starboard past Point Judith and eventually to the LI Sound. We got off the mooring a few hours late on Saturday so we spent the night at anchor near the Newport Bridge.


Today we saw mainly water and fog and lobster pot bouys dodging them along the way. Motored at times at 8 kts, with the current an 4 kts against with twin Yamaha 9.9 OB’s. There was no wind in the fog for 12 hours, then we headed to set anchor in Mattituck basin tonight at 8. Tomorrow the winds should be better for sailing @ 15-20kts South wind on a beam reach. Tomorrow we sail to Port Washington and Tuesday to the Hudson and points North. After locking thru the NY canal system, Champlain canal we will end up in Lake Champlain. Anyway I will be on board another week to get her home and will have more to see along the way.

It became eventful this afternoon when we were slammed by this front moving in. Being out on the sound in this, scared the hell out of me. Lightning and gusts to 40kts. We had nowhere to go. We already had a reef in the mainsail and we furled in the Genoa in to reef 2. We sailed thru it with foul weather gear on.


It hit us as we passed Port Jefferson.
We had been sailing faster than I had ever been seeing a consistent 8 kts and at times 9 kts. On a 20kt apparent wind. And I thought the Bene was fast. This cat blows it out of the water. on a beam reach. Never felt comfortable going out in 20 kt winds in the Bene. The cat is a different animal. Comfortable right up until the storm hit us with 40 kt winds. The cat handled it fine. The people new to her did not know how she would react but we got to know her well by the time we came out the other side. We are all good and nothin broke so calling it experience gained, although that was not on the bucket list. We made it to an anchorage short of our destination but will work for us tomorrow as we run Hells Gate to the Statue of Liberty by evening. Most likely anchor near her tomorrow night, and wait for favorable tide current to start the run up the Hudson.

Earlier this morning we motorsailed @ 7kts on one motor and tilted the other up for less drag, until the wind picked up.

Set sails for the first time. New 135% Genoa and her mainsail.

Are you kidding? Look at these conditions we endured last week! I could barely keep the crew from all out panic. 40mph in those conditions is rougher than it looks. And don't get me started about our beam reach. Weren't sure we'd ever make it back...

Tonight’s anchorage between Ellis Island and the mouth of the Hudson

I can say the ride thru Hells Gate was rather sporty. Saw 10.4kts on motors. Steering was two hands on the wheel driving the East River with currents, eddy’s and flotsam and jetsam to dodge.
Looking the other way is Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty on the other side


We start up the Hudson tomorrow on a favorable tide. The Hudson is tidal all the way up to Albany.

Started up the Hudson today. We fueled up, pumped out and grabbed a few provisions, beer, eggs and AA batteries at the marina store at Liberty Landing Marina and started up the Hudson.

Sidebar… looking under the galley floor boards this morning and found these unopened bottles. Expiration date of 2022.

Made good time on the river today doing 8+kts. most of the way on motors.

We made it to Newburg, NY, could not find a good anchorage, so I rented a transient side tie slip at a marina for the night as rain was coming. You can see our track as we attempted the anchorage twice but the riverbed cable would not give us enough chain to lay out. So we went across the river, to find a marina.



Heading to Hop O Nose marina tomorrow to un step the mast for the rest of the trip home.

The first photo of the Manhattan skyline looks like Hudson Yards. The tallest building has a wedged shape observation deck (Edge) with a glass window in the middle that you can pay to go up to. Way too high for me - I passed.

The Javits Convention center is just north of Hudson Yards and I've been going to a trade show there the past 25 years. The area around the Javits used to be sketchy as hell but after Hudson Yards was built it improved quite a bit.

The trade show has been moved to Orlando for 2025 (and beyond) and I won't miss NYC for one second - not my kind of town.
