I have a ram mount on my dash with my IPhone running Navionics and Pandora pretty much all day long. In the past I have used an external battery sitting in my cup holder, since I dropped it on the floor when we got caught in a rainstorm and ended up burning it out...SUX, I tried to find a better way.

It is a direct replacement for our power outlet, literally took off the four dash panel screws, unplugged our power socket lines and replugged them on this, total time about 7 minutes and now I can plug phone direct...and have another port leftover, pretty much nothing I have uses cig lighter anymore anyway.
