Our ISP DigitalOcean.com says they suffered a denial of service attack against their NYC1 data center where our server instance is housed this evening. Our forum was offline for about an hour. They are saying the attack was not specific to our forum but against multiple customers. I am going to press for more info tomorrow and will update this thread as I learn more.

Thanks again @Bruce for keeping us running so smoothly. sounds like they caught it and fixed it pretty quickly. But I'm no computer expert ;)
 
It was probably some poor schmuck who spilled a Diet Coke on his terminal at the data center and knocked the whole thing down!!
 
I did find it odd you didn't tell us about upcoming downtime!
