bought the boat new and Yamaha took me for a test ride. Test ride was only 15-20 mins. We used all throttle to test boat but never anything longer than a minute at any RPM.

So I asked if that's how I can break the boat in and was told yeah. They added just don't hold RPMs longer than a couple mins. Best to use all RPMs to break in good. This is one of Yamahas top selling dealers.

Went to lake and rode for an hour+. A minute in 1 rpm, another at 2, another at 3 and so forth to full throttle. Never holding RPMs longer than a min or so. A few times random speeds just playing with it. But again, never left at same rpm over a min.

Went home and read the Manual haha and this is nothing like I'm supposed to be doing. Called Yamaha and they said I'll be fine doing what I'm doing. I'm somewhat worried i could have damaged the engine. Of course everything is fine.

Question is... Am I really ok?

The closest Ive come to getting an honest answer on this was from my AutoX engine builder. He told me to break in a new engine the way i intended to drive the vehicle. If its intended to be a red-liner, shift it and break it in that way. The rings will seat where they need to for the RPMs that you'll use.

Dude! This answer is what I wanted to hear. The manual seems conservative. but Yamaha was like just don't stay at any rpm too long. Confusing. Haha

I think you'll be fine, that's similar to how I broke mine in. I've got close to 70 hours with no issues at all.

You've done nothing wrong, the main no no is hitting high revs for a prolonged time. Yamaha do state however that every boat is tested at WOT but I suspect not for long.
I'd always like to "be kind" to the engine until a 10 hour oil change anyhow, then it's as you like, enjoy and have fun.

thank you so much for taking the time to respond. im sitting here thinking i want to start over haha. im going to continue using the entire throttle at minimal times to get a well balanced break in.

Try not to tow anything (tubes, wake boards).
