Does anyone have any issues with exhaust? Mine seems to smoke more than I consider normal and when underway the exhaust will role back into the cockpit to the point where we can't sit in the back seats. Dealer has been over it and can't find any issues.

How many hours on the boat?

@Dan Hops Welcome to the forums!

I know my boat had some fumes when it was breaking in due to the rich fuel mixture to protect the engine during break in period, then it became quieter, and the exhaust fumes stopped. You can still smell a tad every now and then, but nothing bad. Maybe your dealer should check the air fuel mixture using the BRP software. It will show any deviations. Also, what color are the fumes? If they are blueish, its oil in the combustion chamber, if its black its fuel, white/yellowish its coolant.

Ok, remember when the boat is moving or at temperature, it uses a heat exchanger plate under the rear transom of the boat for its closed loop cooling. This plate will get extremely hot, and will steam when it contacts the water. You can see it at 1.49 on my video.

You may have to check it out out of the water to see what the exhaust looks like coming out of the side pipe by the jet nozzle.

@Dan Hops glad to have you onboard, Yamaha doesn't have the heat exchanger and I would have never guessed it was steam, videos are a great tool to take the wonder of " it's smoking" and see it,

Scarabmike is a great resource and we hope you can contribute with your experiences as well, update your profile with your location so we know where you're at,

I'm guessing your speed and wind direction are causing this condition. I remember running 2stroke boats and pwc's in no wake zones and being suffocated with exhaust because the exhaust was blowing the same direction and speed the boat was moving.

this is what i'm seeing. It roles into the back seat and I've had it tested and it reads over 150 ppm for carbon monoxide.

I would have the catalytic checked. Anything above 35 ppm is hazardous. That amount of smoke/steam isnt normal.

At what level does carbon monoxide become toxic?
For healthy adults CO becomes toxic when it reaches a level higher than 35 ppm (parts per million) with continuous exposure over an eight hour period.. When the level of CO becomes higher than that a person will suffer from symptoms of exposure. Mild exposure over 2-3 hours (a CO level between 35 ppm and 200 ppm) will produce flu-like symptoms such as headaches, sore eyes and a runny nose. Medium exposure (a CO level between 200 ppm to 800 ppm) will produce dizziness, drowsiness and vomiting in as little as 1 hour. This level of exposure is deemed to be life threatening once three hours has passed. Extreme exposure (a CO level of 800 ppm and higher) will result in unconsciousness, brain damage and death in as little as a few minutes. OSHA guidelines state that the maximum exposure over an eight hour time period is 35 ppm.

Wow! That's not good, it looks like there is enough forward speed to get away from it.

Was the wind blowing the same direction as your travel?
Was the windshield and door closed?
If so,try opening the window and door to see if the wind blows it away.

You may have found a design flaw in the aeordynamics of the boat.

WOW !! again, I was surprised to see the roll back on Mike's boat but that was a lot, The dealer thinks you're OK running it like and not being able to use your rear cockpit seats ???? Has it been like that since day 1 ?

If the dealer won't give you any further help I would suggest running it up to Scarab corporate and if they don't give you a quick answer to fix go directly to social media with the video and something like "Scarab thinks it's ok to run my by with 150ppm co2 coming into the cockpit" to try to shame them into helping you.

Shame them? Hmmm, I could think of a few other things I'd do if it were me, but this is a family forum!

Tell them your next call will be to the United States Coast Guard. They take carbon monoxide poisoning very seriously: http://www.uscgboating.org/recreational-boaters/carbon-monoxide.php

And then after that you'll be posting your problem up on all the social media outlets....start with a blast to their Twitter feed: @ScarabBoats https://twitter.com/ScarabBoats

Funny, this was their last post to Twitter: As summer draws near we embrace National Safe Boating Week. Learn more about how to ensure a safe Scarab experience.

@Murf'n'surf ,

I don't have the exhaust issues. My steam doesn't smell at all. I have no clue whats happening with his power plant. Maybe even call BRP for a solution.

Im going to take the Scarab out in the water in a few. Ill put the camera looking towards the rear.

Here is a quick run on my boat. I have 32 hours on mine. You can see a slight mist of steam when I accelerate, but I can confirm it smells like moisture.

That looks and seems legit to me. But @Dan Hops doesn't. There HAS to be something wrong there...it happens unfortunately. I'm sure it's fixable if you find someone willing to do the right thing.
