Ok, emergency flares are expiring in July.... What do I do with them?

I know what I WANT to do with them :woot: but not sure thats legal. So...any suggestion, good or bad LOL???

Would be a damn shame to just throw them away heheheheh

I think July 4th and December 31 are terrible days to need to use flares to get someone's attention in an emergency.

I always keep the expired ones as backup, but my uncle use to burn through then on new year's Eve. Unsure of the legality of that.

2am Sandbar camping, dancing like a rav and listening to the music from the boat. Yes it did happen and it was awesome!!

@Coheeba, how many of those lights would you need on your boat? Just one? My flare pack has 4 I believe, but is the requirement for just 1?

Shoot them parallel to the water and they will skip. I've shoot off tons of old flares. They don't shoot nearly as far as you assume they would. Unless they have parachutes you don't get more that maybe 5 seconds of visibility. Better to find these things out before you waste one in a critical situation.

Only one it satisfies the CG requirement and all you have to do is change batteries.

I have all the gun canister flares and I keep the old ones as backup. If I get stranded I am gonna shoot some serious flares!

I'm not saying there have been some "good" ideas or "bad" ideas here but let's just say you guys are great "enablers"..LOL

For insurance purposes only I'm not saying what I may do but I have a few ideas...THX [flag]

I had some of the 12 gauge shotgun shell signal flares that I fired off the other year, I was distinctly underwhelmed by their performance.

Went up maybe 50-60 feet, lasted maybe 3 seconds.

I have a much more realistic viewpoint on their utility now.

As an aside, most of my exposure to flares has been through the military...as magazine custodian on a warship, I literally signed for every single one that we carried. The NEQ on the ship was almost 2 tons, and that was without our RIM162's onboard.

:-)

They burn fancy in a camp fire. Cam.

You guys gave some GREAT ideas on how to "dispose" of the old flares....But THEN y'all come up with the safer idea of hanging onto the expired ones JUST in case. So now instead of having a little fun, I guess I'll play it safe and keep mine when they expire. Talk about a roller coast of emotions haha
