I read a more detailed account of the accident but cannot find it now. Basically a 20 something man was towing four teen girls on a tube when he hit a concrete wall , of course the tube followed the boat into the wall. Briefly stated, too much speed and not enough common sense.
Ironically, a few days ago I was talking to my friend’s 21 year old son who bought his first boat (an older 18 foot Sanger ski boat) late last season. When he asked me for some tips on towing people in tubes I told him,
To Be very careful when towing tubers, it’s easy to forget how fast you are going, to let the speed creep upwards or to give in to peer pressure when everyone is having a good time, competing to see who can stay on the tube or cheering you on to toss them tossed off of it. You will forget, nor should you, what it feels like when someone gets hurt. It’s either a guest or crew, usually family or a friend. They may have ridden with you to the water that day and may also need you to drive them to the hospital or call an ambulance for them immediately as well, regardless of the fact that you are still responsible for the safety of the rest of the people on board and for the boat. Either way it’s a terrible way to end that day (or any day) for everyone involved.
