Just finished a week of boating in lovely Muskoka, Ontario cottage country. Pulled out the boat, everything went just fine. Arrive back at the cottage to finish packing and do my double checks, which includes tightening the winch strap. I turn the handle and it just spins without winching. After 1/2 a turn, the handle falls off and I realize that the hex nut/mounting point has sheered off!
This is a joke. I've owned this winch for 5 years, and in this time it was used MAYBE two dozen times since the boat sits in the marina most of the time. Trailer is stored indoors in the winter. No excuse for this type of failure. I wish I could blame it on my massive heft, but I'm seriously not that strong, and use the 2nd stage crank as a final step when necessary.
Anyone have this problem? Is this a part that can be replaced? I'm just happy it happened at the end of our trip and the boat was mostly fully taught.
