Okay, ignoring the 5200 all over the transducer from a previous in-hull placement, it is now mounted where you see it. I took it out yesterday and got clean readings all around...until I hit 20 knots. I'm assuming this is turbulence from the first step just forward? So, my question is: Do you lower the transducer a little more to get it past the assumed turbulence from that first step to get it deeper into the non-turbulent water...or...do you add a separate depth finder only and just accept the fact you can't get depth readings and other capabilities over 20 knots?

I don't know where you boat but I could not go without a working depth gauge at cruising speeds. But than, of course, I am mostly on a treacherous river.
I think @ClemsonTiger had a power transducer installed that worked well when he had his FSH.

I boat around St. Augustine in the intracoastal and St. Johns. Plenty of shallow areas and oyster beds. But I go slow around those anyway. I just lowered it a few mm. but I don't think it's going to be enough. I'm looking at the plate just below the jet nozzle where I saw someone else mount theirs. I'd have to drill a hole through the plate though and that's my main concern.
 
Thru-hull transducer is what I used when I had the FSH. I'm not a fan of transom mounted transducers but that is my opinion only. Too many variables can cause them to not read correctly, break off (hit something) or be obstructed by the hull/hull strakes and the motor (outboard) or jet drive.
I initially placed the transducer in the bilge area just in front of the speed sensor but it wouldn't read anything so I opted for the transom. Now I'm thinking of moving the transducer to the metal plate below the nozzle. I placed a stern saver so at least I haven't drilled the hull there.

Thanks for responding. I tend to agree, but I go really shallow sometimes.

Thank you for finding that! What an involved process. I'm thinking of doing what DriftAway did and mount it to the aluminum under the jet. It seems to be the least effort with the best possible result...but it seems to work.

Losing depth readings on my Garmin chartplotter at high speeds
There are several reasons you might lose your depth reading when travelling at high speeds. It could be related to the transducer's mounting location, device settings, or you could be outrunning the return signal if you are moving too fast.

If the transducer is mounted on the transom, here are a few troubleshooting steps to follow:

  • Transom mount transducers will not work at any speed if they are installed on a powerboat with inboard motors, or any sailboat.

Yeah. That's gotta be the sweet spot. Out on the Reef installed his along the step behind the transom which I wish I could do but the 74dv transducer has too big of a footprint on the mount.
 
Important distinctions. I'm moving to mount it below and slightly forward of the jet nozzle on the aluminum plate. Once I get it engineered I'll post a pic. Trial and error!
