Has anyone used an auger anchor for mooring?

I started to go for a cruise Saturday to try out my new camper cover in the light rain. When I stepped onto the boat, it didn't move. The boat was sitting on the bottom! I had bought a 66" galvanized auger anchor to see if it might work as part of a 4 point tie-up for my dock, so I installed it in deeper water off of the dock as a mooring, using chain to come up to the surface through a pvc pipe to make a tie off. Supposedly, the auger is rated for 11000 lbs of holding force. Any experiences?

I use a MUCH smaller one to anchor the stern so we don't beach. Works like a champ!

Thanks. I'm a little worried about the long term holding power, but from what I can find it depends a lot on what material the lake/sea bottom is in each installation. Time will tell if mine is OK.

We use an auger spike from Home Depot for a stern tie down in shallow water when we are anchored at a beach.
The spike is for anchoring a large dog run but it has worked very well for a large jet boat and only cost 5 or 6 bucks.

Attach to pvc, add a T fitting at your desired length.
The pvc adds a little flex to allow it to move slightly with waves, but I use a stretching line to cushion the blow. Works great in the muck and sand. Has never failed. Typically end up with multiple boats attached as well.
Now I just want to figure a way to add more length at a time and go like 12 feet down for deeper waters.

Maybe use unions and pre-drilled holes in unions and pipe sections, build to desired length and top with T fitting pre-drilled to match the drilled holes in the pipes, attach lanyards to the fittings with quick release pins from McMaster Carr?
