Sorry to pull up this old thread! We have been boating a bunch in the Illinois and always put in at Morris. How is the river north (east) of Morris past that next set of locks? Do you have any recommended places to drop in? We live in Downers and trailer our boat down to Morris so if there is a place even closer that has the same Illinois river benefits as the pool between Morris and Ottowa then I’d love to know about it!
We slip at Big Basin in Channahon. They have a pay launch there. The pool is not nearly as long as the Morris to Marseilles pool. There is the Kankakee branch of the Illinois that is popular. There’s a couple sand bars and islands. There’s a great restaurant called the Big Fish at Harborside Marina. The Basin has a bar and they sometimes have someone cooking out. There is a public launch on the kankakee but the extra travel to get there I would pay the fee at the Big Basin.
Snug harbor is great. We take weekend cruises through the locks and stay the weekend at heritage harbor and rent a town home or head to starved rock marina and rent a floating home. We prefer heritage. Love that new marina. Month and a half and we get the boat out of storage. Bring on spring!!
Lock through at Marseilles and they are down about a mile. If you really want an awesome run go out in at starved rock and you can run all the way to Peoria. It’s a beautiful run.
Lol sorry. Go to heritage harborottawa.com. They have a list of their different rentals and pricing. Or just call them also. If you are arriving by boat make sure to tell them you need a transient slip.
