How to connect GPS to Garmin VHF?

What do I need to connect my Garmin 315 VHF to my Garmin GPSMAP 1042xsv chartplotter for GPS capability? The VHF alarms out after a few min due to no GPS input. There is no cable connected between the two and I'm not sure what type of cable I need.
 
What do the instructions say?
 
Was already installed when I bought it.
 
You need an NMEA 2K backbone in your boat. If you already have a backbone, connect the VHF 315 to the backbone using an NMEA drop cable.
 
Okay, so I ran the NMEA 2K to my VHF. I have GPS signal on my Chart plotter but nothing still to my VHF. It will go about 5 min and alarm " no signal found" Any ideas?
 
Im my Simrad I had to configure it to talk to the N2k network, then configure the radio to also communicate with network. You probably will have to do the same with your Garmin

Is there an "NMEA 2000 for Dummies" sort of reference to learn the basics? Poking around on the interweb has only got me so far. I know I have it in my boat, and a few things are connected to it, like my Simrad and trim tabs and I think my troller, but beyond that I don't know what I don't know. I like to know how things work, and at some point will be adding VHF and sidescan which (I think) both will benefit from/require hooking to the backbone. Or is it as simple as following the instructions in the box of what I buy and adding a connector to the backbone? Thanks

Sidescan transducer(s) will connect directly to the sonar port of your Simrad MFD — not to the NMEA 2K network. The depth and temperature measured with the transducer can be shared on the NMEA network from the MFD that's running the transducer. Sharing the sidescan image requires an Ethernet network in addition to the NMEA network.

my working plan is to add a screen for new transducer and keep factory Simrad for nav & plain sonar. I assume as long as 2 transducers are set at different frequencies I’ll be ok.

I actually run 3 transducers simultaneously — the factory thru-hull for depth & downscan, plus two Active Imaging 3-in-1 transducers for sidescan — from two MFDs.

I prefer running down+sidescan together on the factory Go12, with chart+radar overlady on the NSS12 evo3s that I mounted directly above the Connext screen.

The NSS12 evo3s is generating sidescan from the two AI 3-in-1 transducers, while the Go12 is generating downscan from the thru-hull. Both scans are easily shared to either or both of the screens via ethernet. The Halo 20+ radar image is also shareable via ethernet.
