Should the impeller have any play/turn to it at all? I was cleaning out my ports today (a lot of weedy junk in there) and I was able to ever so slightly turn (maybe 1/8 inch) the starboard impeller. I tried the port one, and couldn't really get it to move at all. It's super difficult to try and move them reaching through the ports and I've never really noticed whether it moved before or not, so figured I'd ask....

edit: the SB engine was the one that sucked up a rope last week. Also the engine that needed a starter relay replacement.

I can't move mine at all, if that helps any. Not saying that's right or wrong. I haven't had any issues with mine though.

Yeah my port one doesn’t move at all. What would cause the stbd to be able to move like just ever so slightly?

I was out and checked again today....it’s definitely got a few degrees of play in the shaft/impeller when you turn it. Only the stbd side.

I don't know enough to comment whether it is good or bad. Hoping someone will chime in who has some knowledge about this. However, I will say it seems odd to me. I'm just curious if you swapped the impellers, would the side that has some play in it still have it or would it move to the other side?

Hopefully get a few comments before I undertake that :) removing pumps is not my favorite task. I should also note I’ve only ever removed my stbd impeller. I couldn’t get the port off before and ended up not needing to. Will have to hook up the winch straps again if I need to pull both to check that out. Aside from the play it would be nice to know what else to look for before I go ahead and pull them.

Honestly, based on what you just said, I would encourage you to pull both of them and grease them. I take mine out without any problems at least twice a year for various reasons. But I agree, wait on some more comments.

I’ve taken the stbd one off three times. First one needed the winch straps, after that no problem at all.

Does play transfer to DS?

Yes, the drive shaft turns the same amount as the impeller. The impeller isn't loose on the drive shaft.

Try turning PTO from mid bearing housing. I doubt your turning engine PTO.
Check clearance differences between dampener of SB and Port engine. Could be slack your noticing. Just guessing though.
