I am about to install my Garmin 43 DV which has a transom mounted transducer. I looked at a thru hull, but decided the transom mounted was more reliable and provided more info. Of course, the only issue was drilling holes thru my hull. But I found a solution (link below) which has excellent reviews, and eliminated the holes in the hull below the water level!

I installed that unit in my 190FSH. I've only been in the lake and shallow intercostal with it so far. Depth works. Fish finder looked like a mess but the water was all stirred up from bad weather. Hope to get out in the Gulf soon for a better review.
