Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has opinions on how much performance is affected by stator wear. It's a Merc 175 that's slow to plane.
I've got about .030 gap in the wear ring-not great but not awful and plan to pull the ride plate later today but no obvious issues there.
I'm just not sure how much this stator wear is affecting things-see attached pic.

I would not call that wear; I would term it damage. Those missing chunks, along with the build up of crud, would definitely degrade performance. You might consider yourself lucky that you can still get on plane. I would replace it or have it refurbished.

100% with @Elliott ......that is well beyond wear. An R&R would make a huge difference.

Thank you both for the input. Yes you're right-more in the way of damage It's a pretty rough casting for sure.
Being the frugal-poor sort I'll try firing up the TIG and see how it goes.

The stator is suppose to smooth out and put a spin in the discharge, its likely just splattering all over the place with that thing. The .030 won't affect top end much but will allow it to cavitate under heavy load.
