I haven't been on the water yet. I do know our lake is full of logs and debris.

I was wondering if I have any options other than sanding down the boat to install a keel guard?

It's super easy man. I put my first one on last summer, you just have to scuff it up and the Keel guard comes with everything needed. Go for it

A couple guys on here have used line-x like truck bed stuff instead.

Keel guard and keel shield products add cushioning that a spray on product does not. After installing three of these on two different boats, there is nothing to worry about. Sanding is a bit dramatic when describing the prep process. You literally give it a good once over with a red scotchbrite pad and clean with acetone.

I ran a quick sharpie line down the center of the keel to help with lining up during the install. Easy peezy. If you have a roller from a Kilmat install, that's a good tool to help press it into place and avoid air bubbles.

I also put mine on last spring, Keel Guard. I really like it. Doesn't decrease speed or handling and gives extra protection against scratches as well if you hit a log or something else floating at speed.

What I needed to hear but not what I wanted to hear. :p
what is there to be afraid of? If you have never done one before, it's probably a half hour prep job at most. be glad you are not peeling an old one off. It's going to be covered permanently.
