I just installed a keelguard on my friends boat. I noticed a fine half inch line of sanding and cleaning that I did when installing my the keelguard. How do I fix this ? Do I need a touch up paint ? Thanks.

Best

Time to break out the buffer and polishing compound. Your boat is colored gel coat and not paint. You just need to polish. I am sure someone with some more expertise will chime in.

You can tape off the keelguard and wetsand the scratched area with fine wetsand paper. Then polish after

Wait, you have to sand the gel coat to add the keel guard?

Yes it comes with a scotchbright pad to scuff up the surface
Got it, so it would be best to lay down tape to the proper width before scuffing.

Did that. Missed a couple of places especially where the bow curves and the masking tape went wide. Going to get some wet sand paper and see how it goes. Any specific brand or number I need for this ?

800 to 1000 grit wet sandpaper should be good

Will this work ?IMG_5708.JPG

It should. Just may take some more elbow grease. But that will definitely bring the shine back

I was told by the dealer that is not color gel!!! That is automotive paint.

I will know today when I wet sand and buff it out

@txav8r

According to the instructions that come with the KeelGuard the reason for the scuffing is two part: (a) to provide a rough surface for a more permanent bond, and (b) to remove the "anti-microbial coating" that is on the outer layer of boats. (which deters a proper seal with the 3M adhesive)

Yes. The lesson learnt here by me is...make sure to mask tape accurately first and double and triple check before I start scuffing to avoid headaches :banghead:down the road.

Good to know. A lot more work than I anticipated.

3 hours from start to finish for me
