17 year old got into her first accident coming out of a Bigby on her way to work. Hit making a left turn out of the parking lot. Speed limit is only 25 through there, the car got totally spun around. I don't think the person whom hit her was going 25 mph. If she pulled out a split second slower it would of hit her on the Driver's door and she probably would of been hurt if not worse.

She is ok, shook up, and still went to work.

Glad she is fine and that is what matters, the car can be repaired. People are driving super bad/ fast and aggressive. I spent 23 years stopping bad drivers and cleaning up the mess they made crashing into every one and every thing , but I honestly believe that it is way worse than any time that I have seen. The interstate is insane the city streets are horrid. Just remember people are creatures of habit and a lot are developing some seriously bad ones with the traffic enforcement being held back due to the pandemic.

If they didn’t brake at all 25mph can do a hell of a lot of damage.

Glad she is ok and she’ll learn from it. Good thing she was driving that big Ford!

My first accident involved 1 car and a tree, much harder to explain to mom and dad :bag:

Glad she's ok, man what a scare for any parent. I have a few teen drivers myself. Cobra is exactly right, drivers have gotten noticeably worse over the years. Dont even get me started on cell phones. Hopefully this is a cheap lesson for your daughter in regards to her defensive driving mindset.

The admiral is pretty shook up about it, she is her daughter.

Her father and his dad are already looking at it and think they can fix it, the flatbed just dropped it off at their house. The Admiral and her ex husband bought the big ass car to help if there was an accident. So it did what it was supposed to do.

The problem is, is that we live in and around small suburban cities where they park cars on the street. She said she looked but couldn't see anything coming with the cars parked on the street. And that car sits real low to the ground and she is only 5' 5" tall so you don't get good visibility. In our two cars which are SUV's it is easy to see over the top or around all the cars parking on the street.

Yes I just developed a new app, it tells the driver to put the damn phone down and go the light changed!

Super glad she is okay and that you had the wisdom to put her in a crown Vic! Those cars weigh like 5000#, that makes a huge difference in the amount of g’s she would be subjected to. Hopefully you can fix the car and she can keep on driving that battle wagon.

Again, super glad she is okay !!

abducted by aliens and this is where you woke up

Glad it wasn’t worse. My oldest got into his first accident on the way home from his HS commencement ceremony.. rear-ended the car in front of him. 4-banger Ford Ranger and all that happened was a cracked grill and a bent hood.

I see accidents like this all the time at an area just as you described. Parked cars on the street blocking the view of cars trying to pull out from a side street, usually cars parked beyond the signage. The speed limit is 25 there also, but cars just fly down it, giving both drivers less reaction time. These are mostly high school students that get slammed into. So, I’m going to propose to the City Council that this particular spot be turned into a four way stop intersection. Who knows if I’ll succeed. Maybe worth looking into in your case as well though.

My sons went off the road and took out two signs last spring, about 3 month after he got his license. He was more scared about my reaction than anything else ? in hind insight it was a great learning experience for him, that fender bender has put the respect for driving in him and he has learned how fast shit can turn south will driving. He is becoming a really good driver.

The car looks repairable, but honestly is probably totaled. I bet repair is as much, if not more than the value of the car.

I would consider getting her in something that sits higher. That would hopefully prevent this from happening again.

@adrianp89 I agree. But it isn't my call, the Admiral and her Ex deal with it. I have learned to be an observer on certain things unless pulled into it. The grandfather works for GM and does some sort of body work and one of the plants. He thinks he can fix it. Time will tell.

I just went out and looked for the aluminum hubcap which they just purchased a set of 4 for the car. Couldn't find it on the road or anywhere.

I know you can't do anything about it, but I WOULD put it in the wife's ear that it's a RWD car, and that looks like at least some axle damage.

The other thing is that sight line problem - 5'5" in that thing, and that's old enough that IF it has side impact airbags, they're still not likely to be as effective as the newer setups.

I haven't had to deal with kids driving for a dozen years, but if I had that issue nowadays, I'd be looking for a Volvo SUV.

Time to teach her the "always turn right whenever you can, and avoid U-turns at all costs" rule. It might cost a few minutes, but it might save you years of your life.

"If you never turn left, you'll be alright"

Totally agree with all your points. Gonna wait a few days and on the weekend when we go have a couple of glasses of wine at the winery I am going to breach the topic again. Blended families are at times complicated.

Kinda backhanded, but I think you'll get the sentiment, I'm hoping there's enough damage that they realize it's going to be a lot more effort than it's worth ?

Dunno about parts procurement, or if there's a good U-pick scrap yard around you, but finding replacement parts might be a pretty big stumbling block right now.

That’s a Grand Marquis, isn't it? If so, I would think mechanicals MIGHT be interchangeable with a Crown Vic, but if not, the Lincoln versions are a lot more scarce, from what I can tell

Either case it’s almost, if not over, 20 years old. While I don’t have kids, I wouldn’t be putting them in something older then them lol. Wonder if active safety gear on newer cars would have prevented this.

I'm no accident expert, but that looks like more than 25mph. But who drives the speed limit these days? Probably was doing 40 in a 25, and slowed to 35 by the time they hit....

Hopefully she learns...and perhaps being short she needs a small SUV?

No matter what....bummer. My wife was rear ended by a teen on their phone in January!

Accident fatality rates are UP everywhere during covid. The roads are less congested, so people are able to drive faster so they do. This means when they DO have an accident, overall, they are driving faster (on average) than they were in prior years.
