The area is beautiful. The hotel was questionable. The locals are nice. The people on the lake some of the rudest and dangerous people I have ever met. I think every boating law and boating ethics were broken this weekend. I saw large boat flying between people on kayaks and paddle boards. I personally had two boats almost run into us. Almost got pushed into island due to wakes from boats flying by within 10 to 15 feet while we were anchored. One came so close and so fast that my vessel took on a large amount of water over the bow. While anchored my wife and kid almost got thrown overboard while we were anchored and fishing. One area there were kids in the water and mostly pontoon boats And other types, would keep flying by. We were also behind and island with a tight channel amongst others anchored and swimming at the time. When one boat almost hit my future daughter in-law on a large tube. I have never been on water with so many inconsiderate rude unethical a****** boat owners in my life. It's a damn shame, that a bunch of people can ruin such a beautiful place.

sorry to hear that. it's a beautiful lake but idiots can ruin anything.

I agree gree here on all points. Beautiful lake. BUT... I often sense a strong ingrained and inexplicable "hostility, resentment, carelessness" local / seasonal resident attitude around Lake George, least of it in the town itself and more so in Warrensburg, Bolton Landing, and Ticonderoga ... Which happens to be exactly the reason we chose not to wet slip there again this year.

Sad to hear your experience somewhat mirrored ours towards the end of the boating season last year.

That said, the wind and wave conditions can get challenging really quick there especially in mid afternoon due to the canyon of mountains on the east and weat side of the lake.

Which island did you anchor and swim off of?

We’re you on the water on the 4th?

I’ve found that the holidays bring out the worst in boaters, or the worst boaters...

I had another boat come within 15’ of me while I was skiing last Labor Day.

Yes was there for the whole week of the fourth. Cut vacation short and headed home

First anchor off of Pine Island till me and my wife almost got ejected over the side of the boat. Then we anchored off in between the mainland and Turtle Island.

Our avatar photo was taken on the west side of Uncas Island which is in the narrows. 4th of July week is the worst by far. I love LG but try to avoid weekends and holiday weeks. I believe at last count there were over 250 rental boats available on the lake. Most of these drivers have little experience and no boater safety training, other than a short video the marinas are required to show the renters. We were almost run over after watching the 4th of July fireworks in the Village several years ago. I try not to boat on the lake at night any more. Headed back for another camping trip on the 17th - 20th.

Just like George's beautiful. Trust one never do the 4th of July there again. Me and my family are going to try and enjoy Lake George once more. But it probably won't be home next year. Sometime near mid September or the third week in September. Some as a very nice local we met there told us that would be the best time when very little people are there

If you would like a little more peace and a lot more New York beauty visit the 1000 islands St. Lawrence River Clayton NY.
The boating is incredible, large ships , great food, winery, and oh ya 1000 islands best of all you better be a good boater to come here. No weekend wing nut boat renters

Sorry y'all had a bad time. However if it was on the 4th then it's likely to have happened anywhere you boat if it's a popular lake. The holidays bring out the worst of the worst idiots. For that reason we typically stay off the water during the holidays. However I did go out on the 4th but my wife and daughter went shopping instead and preferred it that way. Just too many idiots to watch out for. I had two close calls both with head on boaters neither of which knew the proper heading they should have taken. I kept moving to the right and they would move to their left. Got a bit hair raising as we both had to pass each other in a small area so lots of butt puckering and hand firmly on the throttle ready to make evasive jet boat maneuvers if needed!

This lake is no joke!!!

Luckily it is heavily policed.

Here is the Marine Patrol Report for Lake George 2017

Some pretty crazy stuff in there.

Swear I did't do it.

The previous year probably had some unprintable parts.

Spent some time camping on Turtle Island (notorious for rattlesnakes), Long Island, and Saint Sacrement Island.

Swam around West Dollar Island, between Speaker Heck and Long Island, in the tiny bay on the South end of Turtle Island, and along the Black Mountain Shore without incident.

I have seen a 3 foot long snapping turtle in Shelving Rock Bay along with many near boat collisions there and a lady almost get chewed apart by a prop.

Pontoon boats often capsize on Lake George when storms pop up.

Kayakers are run over for being alive!

I know a guy who's dog's name is Uncas...etc...etc.

Scene at Shelving Rock Bay looking west right before the snapper appeared from the shadow under the boat.

What happens to all the beer confiscated by marine patrol?

Depends what kind of beer it is.

Have had campers there leave cheap left over beer at island campsites instead of lugging warm beer back on the boat.

LG really is a wonderful and safe place to visit. Like all big lakes, there are bound to be idiots on the water. Be safe!

Agreed, or Alexandria bay. I grew up on the St. Lawrence river. Boldt Castle is an amazing area to explore with your boat.

Wow!! That's amazing! We are looking at camping there with the boat in early fall. Any recommendations? I know there are state campgrounds there but have no idea what area to stay in.

Swan bay is a very nice Rv park with park models for rent.

Here is our trip at the end of September, pretty much empty due to the water temps being too cold. Holiday weekends in any body of water can get pretty crazy so we try to avoid them all together.
