Looking for crate engine for my 1.8L NA FSH 190. I had this engine rebuilt last spring 2023 and I'm having same issue loss of compression 1st cylinder. I'm thinking it has failed from faulty injector or coil. Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

No one makes a crate engine for these boats. Not even yamaha. I would look for a used engine pulled from a ski or boat. They are out there but pricey

There’s a place I found in Florida SBT

You have to send in your engine and they will rebuild it. They dont have new crate engines fot the 1.8l they do offer new MR1s only.
I deal with them frequently. You have to crate up your engine and pay to ship to them. Once its received they will inspect and give you an updated cost to rebuild and time frame

Yes , I agree . I spoke with them today . It’s not looking like a cost effective solution.

What was the last problem that was fixed.............broken ring..........bent valve not closing.........damaged valve seat...........ect.......seems strange it would happen again.

Loss of compression and found a piece of the ring jammed into spark plug. This time loss of compression same #1 cylinder and the spark plug gap is closed . Also looks like something was bouncing around above piston . Attached photo of top of piston .

That’s one nasty looking piston top.......the engine rebuild sheet looks good the damage was repaired.....but the unlined cause of the damage was not fixed. What I see and what you described is a LEAN condition that can damage the piston , rings, valves, and spark plugs. A single cyl lean condition is caused by a fuel problem with the injector, EMC, fuel pressure, or a vacuum leak at the manifold. A lean condition drives the cyl temperature and the pressures through the roof causing the damage you see.

Bottom line fix it again or drop in a different motor........... be careful it could happen again(even on new motor) if the fuel injectors, EMC, or sensors that control the EMC are not tested to be within factory specification one of those caused the lean condition.

Hope this helps a little and sorry you are having such trouble it takes the fun out of boating for sure.

Thank you for your help ! I’m learning along the way and definitely won’t allow this to happen again.

When you purchase a short or long block you usually boat all the manifolds...injectors and reuse all the sensors like MAP, ECM computer, cam position sensor......ect. All these need to be checked to meet factory specification. Intake manifolds need new gaskets and to be well checked for cracks.....any air leaks can cause a lean problem

Most likely the originating problem has been overlooked. Not a coincidence that the same cylinder blew up

Good point about the intake manifold gasket yes I will bite the bullet and bring it to a Yamaha dealer to have them go over it once I put it back together. Run some diagnostic on it. I’m sending my engine to a company called Umatek in Quebec , they will let me know if it’s a complete rebuild or just top end . Worst case flat fee 4900.00 all new internal parts including labour . And they provide me with all the remaining gaskets to put back together.

A yamaha dealer really cant do much diagnostics, its not like an automobile. They will be limited to what can be checked. My advice would be to have all the injectors cleaned and inspected replacement of cylinder 1 if possible. Inspect the intake thoroughly for cracks regarding cylinder 1 also.

After running again run it on the water for a cruise, shut down without idling too long and pull all the plugs and inspect for lean condition

I've got a 2014 242 I'm parting out. 16.3 hours on the 1.8s. Message me if interested. Complete drop in engine. $4k

Looking to partout a 2014 Yamah 242 limited S if anyone needs parts. It has twin 1.8 engines with 16.3 original hours. Located in Southern NJ.
Hull is trash underneath. Seats are in great shape, gauages are in clean and engine/jet pumps are corrosion free.
Pm for parts needed. Will begin pulling everything this week.

Just responded above. Thank-you for that!

Just make sure the injector is in perfect working order…..the voltage from the EMC computer is correct……. Check wireing to injector a bad ground or voltage wire could limit the voltage received by the injector causing a lean condition. Since your lean was on 1 cyl it is vary high percent it is the injector or a manifold leak at that cyl. Most every other thing effects lean on all cyl at once, not just one cyl
