We are looking to purchase an SX190 and found a 2013 with 46 hours that we can buy for $15,000 which seems like a good price but there is always a catch, maybe a BIG one. Please see the attached photo, any input on how significant of a structural and long term concern this is, is much appreciated.

Also any idea's on a ball park number of what it would cost to fix is also greatly appreciated. This boat is at least a few thousand less than others in the same year range and has almost a 100 hours less so wondering if it's a decent buy or a "run away fast" type situation.

Thank you so much!

Are they the original owners? Judging from the hard edge along the pin stripe, it almost looks like an old repair to the gel coat that's cracking. I'd be asking a few questions. How's the rest of the gel coat look in comparison?

It might have been a superficial repair or there's may have been fiberglass damage underneath. If it feels structurally sound then my guess is it's just a poor bond with the layer of new gel coat and probably not much to worry about structurally... it could be stripped and redone for a price or live with it if you can...

Thank you, that is great feedback as I see exactly what you are referring to. They are the original owners so I will indeed be quizzing them on just what happened to cause it. The boat is 1.5 hrs from me so doing my best to see if it's even worth the trip down. The price and hours are nice but of course this is the trade off....

I'd have to know the whole story of what happened, if it had been fixed before, receipts or the name of the shop and confirm with them,

If this is previously fixed damage and they aren't easily giving you reasonable answers I would walk away because there's no telling what else they aren't being upfront about,

If it really is just a bad repair of somebody was stupid around the dock and rammed them, it's probably not that big a deal and could be fixed correctly,

Does the center, deepest crack appear to be a full through crack? I don't know how thick the fiberglass is and I guess my biggest concern is the structural integrity aspect. I can work with superficial and having someone strip and redo, I'm more concerned on the overall integrity aspect from a long term perspective. Thanks again

Your welcome. From what I can see it looks isolated to the gel coat. I might suggest contacting a local fiberglass/paint repair someone and get their opinion on it and get a guesstimate on repair cost. It may give you a little more leverage to bargain with if you decide you're still interested.

That boat has definitely been repaired. Look close around the emblem, window and pin stripe. Stress cracks go almost all the way up too. Looks like a poor bond + workmanship and is finally beginning to let go. They didn't even remove and replace the emblems when they did the repair because you can see a clear line of gelcoat thickness goop all around their "tape job". Unless this boat was super cheap I'd look elsewhere. Lots of boats out there so why bother with the repair unless of course you're getting it in the super cheap and want to fix it yourself. No telling the story behind it. Without knowing the story and how significant the damage oringally was then you'll always be wondering if these folks were shooting you straight. Could be nothing. Could be a major blow from a piling for all you know. I'd have a surveyor look at it and then low ball them because that's likely a grand or so I would guess to have it fixed cosmetically and that's without knowing is the fiberglass was damaged underneath.

In my observation of the pic., it looks like an old superficial repair that is spider cracking because structural reinforcement/repairs were not sufficient. The gelcoat appears to be a different color under the Yamaha logo and the cracks stop at the uneven appearing gelcoat at the letter A. Those cracks radiate out beyond the limits of your pic. Must have been a big hit to starboard side. I would be concerned with a lot of things here. The hull to deck joint at the rubrail could be a problem. Probably not something I would buy, unless it crossed the insanely cheap threshold. And I would hire a marine surveyor to look at the boat and this repair and his accessment may bring the price down further. I know not cheap, but you may only see the surface of the problem and even good boats are not cheap to own/operate. It's a B.O.A.T. (Break Out Another Thousand)

I agree. That is a large area of repair and extends well beyond the pictured area. The cracks themselves are alarming enough and then when you see the poor quality of the workmanship it gets really scary. I would be extremely hesitant to buy that. Definitely have it surveyed or contact a fiberglass repairer to look at it. I think you'll be surprised by their repair estimate. And obviously don't let the current owner provide any names.

I would pass. There is more than 3k worth of work to get that perfect. 19K gets you a nice one.

It is an older SX190. I would move on.

For about the same price you should be able to find a 230 undamaged, that’s what I would do.

@Glassman hasnt posted in awhile but he may have an opinion on what it will take to fix the damage on the 190 but I also think he or anyone with fiberglass repair experience will need more pictures before they can give you an informed opinion. I’d want to know what the other side looks like and the only ways to access the area are through the helm, possibly through the rear seat and / or behind the capacity plate. As a seller I would be reluctant to go through the effort, as a buyer I would volunteer to do it, actually id insist on it.

An hour and a half drive doesn’t seem bad at all from my perspective but I’ve driven over 400 miles to check out and buy two boats already. It’s like work I have to go where the work/here where the deal is.

I would only take the chance on that boat with a low ball offer. They may want to be out of that boat more than you want it. 7k and no more. That would cover your repairs and keep you in a position that you could flip it as well and trade up in the future. If they don’t accept or negotiate I would move on.
