Hello all,

Going to pick up my first jet boat tomorrow. It's a 2013 with 85 hrs. Is there anything I need to be aware of? I heard on one year something about a leaking cooler... Any info that u can give Is greatly appreciated.. I'm from the Houston area...

:Welcome: Houston area also. Dont know much about the 2013 so cant really help you there, but welcome to the site, and there are plenty of knowledgeable members to help you out!

that has the 1800 engines so aside from the timing chain issues I doubt you have anything to really worry about.

is it a salt water boat or fresh water

Yes then you are better off . If you plan on using it in salt water you should add some zinc to the pump areas as the factory anode is not zinc it is magnesium for fresh water.
Also the pump liners swell up and the pumps will make a ringing sound when you run it out of the water letting you know that the liners are having issues with dissimilar metal corrosion. This is more of a problem with salt water. I run in salt water only , it is a lot harder on the machine.

You are likely thinking of the oil cooler issue... that was only on 2010 and early 2011. You shouldn't have to worry about that issue. Welcome aboard!

was that the broken bolt issue people had with the cooler?

Let me guess haaa you had one. I thought I remember the M R 1 engines having the oil cooler bolt either break or strip also . I never had that issue but I had a timing chain hatch, so if your engine stops running with no warning and when you go to restart it and it sounds like a blender on high speed just before you hear it backfire from raw fuel in the exhaust system you just joined the club.

I really have a hard time with these boats with low hours a 2013 with 85 hours that's a lot of money to just park it in the driveway. You will have tons of use out of that boat, the 1800 engines are very reliable, run on regular fuel no superchargers to fool with or intercoolers etc. And a couple thousand hours is the norm on them before they need a lot of work, I already put 550 hours on both of my 1800 engines with no issues well except that damn chain. And Yamaha fixed it under warranty so that engine actually is like new with less that 200 hours since it was redone.

I plan on taking it occasionally in salt water but it will be mostly in brackish..

just rinse it really good inside and out after salt use
