New owner of A 2000 Yamaha LS 2000 Jet Boat. Lots of work to do but all in all the boat is in good shape needs some eng. work steering cables replaced and a few odds and ends. Looking forward to summer.
Going to upgrade a few things replacing exhaust sys. Port eng. Has a lower comp. cyl. about 20 psi. Using penetrating oil to hopefully free rings. Don’t want to do a top end job if I don’t have to. Also Want to mod the jet clean out plugs with a pin to hold them from popping out under pressure.
Premix isn’t fail safe either. If a carb plugs or fails while underway with premix you’ll be running on two cylinders and you could melt a piston. With injection all cylinders would still be getting oil.
There is already a low oil alarm. But it’s in the injection oil tank. And a lot of people have unplugged them because of false alarms due to an oil soaked float that doesn’t float anymore.
The oil pumps are generally considered reliable. I think a lot of fear of these boats is because people started losing relatively new engines ... due to the using zip ties as hose clamps. So they have a bad reputation.
When I got my boat I replaced all the oil lines in a couple evenings for peace of mind. But yes if the pump failed you’d damage all three cylinders. I figure if I ever have to do one I’d replace all three pistons anyways while I’m at it.
Plus I’d rather have the variable oil injection over pre mix. The engines get more oil when they need it and less when they don’t. Though others are happy with premix.
Good luck with the boat! I used to live in Toms River, and boated on those same waters as well as the Metedeconk. Barnegate bay was great, but can get pretty chopped up, and I remember some hair raising trips through the Point Pleasant canal on busy summer weekends! It's a great area to boat, fish, ski, etc. Have fun!
