I don't know how many have heard or have seen this on the media yet, but I first hand can attest to this. It sucks we can't even enjoy the water in the Treasure Coast area. This is just a link to show some of the pictures of the water and so on. The blue-green algae blooms are horrible. We were out last weekend and the wake was like the ooze in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles my wife was appalled. Hope something can happen and change down here. Here is a link to see what it looks like if curious http://www.surfermag.com/features/everything-is-not-okay-in-florida/#UkYT4cSPweKi7wZB.97

Most local hotspots are shut down now, Peanut Island, most beaches and waterways for swimming what a crappy time to have this happen.

What terrible timing! Hate that for you. Also read yesterday about some free divers that went spear fishing going 10 miles out and it was still out there. Didn't look like it was that far out in the link, but guess it could be.

It's only going to get worse unless they truly restore the fresh water flow into and through the Everglades, which is a natural water filter.

@2nazt I lived in PSL for about 6 years, and this seemed to happen every other year. The problem is Lake Okeechobbe's run off is sent through the St.Lucie waterway (man made) into the St.Lucie River. Then it mixes in with the brackish, and salt water from the lagoon. Along the way it gathers chemicals from the sugar cane fields, and other farms.

The Florida politicians have their pockets lined by Florida Sugar, and Dixie Crystals. They divert the run off towards the ocean so they can plant sugar cane in the fertile muck that would be the natural run off to the Everglades. And at the same time, the Everglades ecology suffers because there is plant life that feeds on this run off.

Its sad, and this year looks to be the worst because of how much rain the lake has gotten.

@ScarabMike thanks for the heads up this is our second year in PSL so first time I'm exposed to this. Ft. Pierce is clear due to the stronger tidal flow and being north. Jupiter isn't as bad either. Looks like we have received the brunt of it this year. Hopefully it gets better soon.

This is terrible. I had no idea that this was going on. Maybe more of the country needs to know and possibly something can be done about it. Start a WhiteHouse.org petition and see if you can get someone other than the crooked local politicians involved.

This has been going on for YEARS on the Gulf side. Fort Myers and Naples have been screaming for a long time. I'm thinking that they decided to send more water to the East coast this year to appease the Gulf coast and now finally the mainstream media has made it a topic.
