Hey All,

I don't have my 242s anymore, so this is my first post in a while, but still can't beat the knowledge and culture of this forum!

Anyways, I'm looking for some info on lakes in the Charlotte area, as I may be moving there late spring/early summer. I see Lake Norman, Lake Wylie, and the waters in between, along with High Rock Lake to the east. I might look for a house on a lake or I might just trailer. Currently, we boat at Lake Coeur d'Alene in Northern Idaho and really love it - deep and clear water,(cold...brrr) plenty of bays. We like to get out and do the water sports, but also just enjoy the family floating and cruising time.

Thanks for any info!

Hi @Belteddeep! I live on Lake Wylie and love it. The lake is in great proximity to Charlotte city center. The lake is a good size with two sandbars that fill up on the weekends. The lake is not as big as Lake Norman but provides places for water sports, chillin, cursing, fishing, etc. If you have any specific questions about Lake Wylie area please do not hesitate to send me a direct message.

I live on High Rock. 2nd largest lake in NC. Lexington and Salisbury surround it, both pretty quiet, country towns. Lots of trash after a rain. Depth fluctuates alot. ~14' depth, so not a deep lake at all. ~362 shore miles, but you either can't access half due to shallow water, or you can't get under a bridge. It is very affordable though. I'd pick Norman all day long if you can afford it. I haven't been on Wylie yet (somehow?), but I hear it's nice also. I'm not sure I could go back to trailering after living on the water. Hell, I barely stay at my beater house 1 night every other week, and that's just to make sure the kids haven't burned it down.

I went through this exact same search a little over a year ago. Wylie is narrower and has a river flowing through it so to speak. Norman is a big lake with lots going on. The traffic around both and the Charlotte area in general is awful during normal commute times unless you live on the west side but the west side has much less to offer.

I have to get the Charlotte every once and a while so I ended choosing Lake Murray in SC but would not recommend it for a regular commute to Charlotte. The Greenville SC area has a couple of lakes but also is not something I would recommend for a regular commute to Charlotte.

No matter which you choose you could have been out boating in a t-shirt and shorts today while the ac was running in your house instead of being buried in snow and stoking the fire. Pluses and minuses to both but I prefer the former.

Happy hunting.

Thanks, @cozilla! I’m hoping to know for sure by end of next week and once I do, I’ll be sure to dig deeper on the questions.

I moved to NC last year after checking out lake Norman a few times with rental boats. I wanted to get on the lake also but I couldn't find a house I could afford with a garage big enough for me. I decided to buy off the lake and put my boat at the Boat Rack Marina on an inside rack. I bought in the north part of Denver on the west side of the lake that is still not over populated yet. It takes about 6 minutes to get to my boat. Lake Norman has five restaurants on it from inexpensive to expensive pricing. I'm retired so I go out during the week when it's not so busy. I was even out yesterday and last Thursday. If you look at lake Norman keep in mind that where route 150 crosses the lake in sherrills ford you won't be able to get under the two bridges to the west if you buy north of them. I can send you the real estate girl I used if you want. She's awesome and knows the area well and won't steer you wrong. She even had me back out of a house after the home inspection which I was thinking the same thing, usually they just want the money and don't care. Good luck
