Attached is what my Yamaha Dealer gave me as a tech bulletin on how to maintain and care for my clean out plugs. This was way back when I owned an LX210, but I've not heard any "official" changes to this.

That said, there are those that say it is better to leave them alone and just let them dry and nothing more.
