I'm going to make it there this Saturday in time for the airshow which ends with the Blue Angels performance. I've been to the event many times since 1994 but this will be my first time seeing it from the water on my or any boat. Here is what I know so far:
1. All 28 guest slips at Pier 39 have been reserved. They take reservations up to 30 days in advance. It doesn't look like they raise their rates over the standard $45 per day for boats up to 30' long during Fleet Week, although I'm not sure since all I got was an email that said all spots were already reserved.
2. The boating restrictions in effect during Fleet Week are:
A) no boating with 500 yards of any military ship.
B) no boating between the southern half of the Golden Gate Bridge and the western half of the Bay Bridge. They didn't provide a map but it sounds like you just cannot boat close to the sf shore line since it is the parade route for the ships and the air show takes place infront of Fishermans wharf.
3. Based on what a yjb member stated and what I could see on youtube there is no place to anchor or raft up, boaters simply drift or troll where they can during the show. If the water is rough I may just try to hide behind Alcatraz or Angel island. Another option would be to pull into angel island and take the tram to the top to see the show but I'm certain it will be crowded there as well, they don't have many guest slips either and they are first come first served. For lunch we may be able to cook at McCovey cove (next to Giant's) stadium but our view of the airshow wouldn't be very good at all from there. Other alternatives would be to go to Berkeley marina but again the view of the air show would be bad and distant.
My and my Brother's family will be going so we will have a full boat and a great time. I will have two go pros and a dslr onboard so I'm sure I will get plenty of stills and video clips. I'm not even going to bring my quad copter, the last thing I want to be is the guy that delayed the air show.
My boat is prepped and ready to go. The fun starts tomorrow morning. If I spot any jet boats out there I will try and swing by to say hello. If any of you are out there and see me please try and do the same. On Sunday I plan to remove the carpet and Bimini in preparation for off season storage. I've already added stabil and will flush the engines after I get the boat home tomorrow night.
As a side note, I had my son wash our jet skis yesterday in our driveway. As he was cleaning up a heard a female UPS driver who was delivering a package to a neighbor yell "water shortage" at him. Well that started a conversation between she and I in which I let her know that I was complying with all water restrictions, she was focused on the fact the water was draining to the gutter. Eventually I told her to report me if she thought it was a reportable event. I'm not sure if she did but she did drive around the block and past my house before she left, possibly to get my address. I'm sure flushing each engine for 15 minutes in front of my house won't go over well with many people either but I will be damned if I don't do just that after boating in SF bay tomorrow.
I will follow up after the event tomorrow. Wish me luck and I hope you all have a fun but safe weekend no matter what you do, whether you are boating or not.
