My guess would be height restriction under the access hatch not allowing to directly come up and over so it breathes better? Or, Yamaha and the supplier are in bed with one another, charge by the inch and pass the cost to the end user..??

Also raising the hoses higher would impact the exhause cooling draining properly and potentially building up water into the engine.

Height is a likely cause.

Also resonance length could be an issue. Longer pipes are typically quieter.

Nobody will really know except the Yamaha Engineer that made that decision. @Julian any chance you have a contact there with some insight?
